He seemed to be a straight-shooter, both as a FOX political analyst and as press secretary. That's a young age to go. I figured something was up when he resigned... he wasn't looking very good.

I fully agree. Knowing that he had to work with the most uninformed, least objective White House press corps since the dawn of television, the man demonstrated a remarkable class and dignity faced with unintelligent, uninformed, and partisan questioning. The man even went to bat for that old hag Helen Thomas when she was losing her prime seat in the new press gallery. A woman with a clear agenda and no concept of facts; yet he put up with all of her inane and idiotic senile questions and made sure she would still have a prime location in the gallery. A woman who averages five readers a month was shown an incredible amount of respect by Mr. Snow.

Totally. It must have been excruciating to show respect to a "journalist" who has covered the white house for a mere 50 years. Tony only cracked a few times; that time he accused her of disseminating Hezbollah's views was HILARIOUS and extremely classy. That wasn't childish at all.
What a shame that Tony never got to work with noted white house reporter Jeff Gannon (formerly James Guckert) of the objective and utterly non-partisan (now defunct) Talon News. In fact, it sounds like you would have also enjoyed his deeply probing, unbiased questions.
He was truly a "part of the team". Never off message, and always ready for a $200/hour "military style" workout.

I agree that Tony Snow crossed the line at times (like the time he used the "tar baby" comparison or the other time when he said race isn't an issue in the U.S.). But at the same time even Democrats like Joe Lockhart have called the press briefings "Kabuki Theater" and chided the lack of professionalism of the Washington Press Corps. For instance, I remember when Britt Hume, who was covering the White House at the time, threw a temper tantrum when the White House travel office stopped giving him special perks when Bill Clinton became President.

Helen Thomas ceased being a journalist years ago. She is a columnist now. If you don't know or refuse to recognize the difference, I feel sorry for you. She spends 500-1000 words a week taking pop shots at an administration. Those so called columns are often times based in fantasy land. She needed to hang it up years ago. See how many columnests get a prime location in the press room.

How can the President continue to govern while parrying an 88 year-old columnist's one question every three years?
At least someone in that press room is taking potshots at this administration, rather than regurgitating their words verbatim as 'news'.
“I've seen things you wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in the rain...Time to die.”
