Here is a house in Youngstown, Ohio you can buy for $3,000. That's right. Not rent. BUY.

http://www.realtor.com/search/listingdetail.aspx?ctid=27093&typ=1&sid=e936017ef94a426eaf5380d4b2d2530e&lid=1100690644&lsn=1&srcnt=1497#Detail

That gives you an idea of how great Youngstown is. They are in the process of plowing down block after block of abandoned homes and turning them into parks...which they don't have the tax base to maintain.

Your friends are welcome here. But I don't think Youngstown has much in common with Northern Virginia. Sorry.

I've been through Youngstown. Typical rust belt town that's seen it's better days. Very Pittsburgh-ish.

It makes Hybla Valley look like Beverly Hills.

Holy crap, $3000 for a house? I would think that you could tear it down for salvage and get more than $3000 worth of material. But I'm not in construction, so I could be wrong.

I like how it says they put over $5000 in repairs into the house, but are only asking $3000 for it!

Thank God it qualifies for FHA. Not sure how I could swing a $3,000 mortgage otherwise.

Sounds like one of those idiots from "Flip That House!"

Those are technically commercial property, correct?

I've heard some people in Youngstown even get this thing called 'health insurance' with their jobs.

Is the $3,000 house a typo where the Realtor meant to put in $30,000?

No, it's not. There is page after this stuff. And it's not just Youngstown. You see listings like this all throughout Ohio and Michigan. It is truly sad.

It's not a typo. On that page you can click and see many more from $3000 and up (to around $7000 and beyond).

You'll find these [sad] deals all over western PA too. Some friends of mine bought a place in Pittsburgh for like 25k a few years back. Granted it's in a really apocalyptic-looking neighborhood, and it's decrepit like the house from
Fight Club, but it's like a huge 5 bedroom single family home. For 25 grand! Most people around here buy cars worth more than that. I never saw anything less than 10k before, but I'm not surprised. Some of those places up there are just downright depressing, filled with some pretty desperate folks.

You'd never bitch about Fairfax again if you had to spend time in some of those places.

Let me warn you. If you are interested in any of these shacks, do not expect any of the copper plumbing or aluminum siding to be there. Oh, and the pretty glass doorknobs that look like crystal will be gone too.

The same thing is happening here too. We are however, rather insulated
from the business cycle here as most everything is generated by Federal
spending. Lots of Government jobs and Federal contract money floating
around. The people here (generally) have no idea what the rest of the
country is going through. If you want a real eyeopener, check out the
Help Wanted Classifieds in the Washington Post. Unbelievable compared
to the Midwest. Thats what brought me here a long time ago. Dayton/
Cincinnati area.

Whoops, forgot to clarify "the same thing is happening here too"
Many homes going through foreclosure are being stripped. The owners
either do it, or the home gets burglarized after the fact. Sad
but true.

It's about to get much, much worse. IndyMac has failed. It could be the biggest bank failure in U.S. history. It happened after the market closed. Dow 10,000, here we come!
