The development of civilization depended on urbanization, which depended on beer. To understand why, consult Steven Johnson's marvelous 2006 book, "The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic -- and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World." It is a great scientific detective story about how a horrific cholera outbreak was traced to a particular neighborhood pump for drinking water. And Johnson begins a mind-opening excursion into a related topic this way:
"The search for unpolluted drinking water is as old as civilization itself. As soon as there were mass human settlements, waterborne diseases like dysentery became a crucial population bottleneck. For much of human history, the solution to this chronic public-health issue was not purifying the water supply. The solution was to drink alcohol."

My understanding is that the Pilgrims dropped anchor at Plymouth Rock because the Mayflower had run out of beer.

oh yeah, keep in mind "beer" in those days was watered-down to the maximum extent one could do so and still call it "beer"...I think I read 2-3% alcohol on the mayflower but I could be wrong..
I don't drink beer often enough to have a favorite. Usually I drink it at this one dude's house who likes to show off his beer knowledge, so he drags out some new beer each time and I just go, "ok then". And with a few small differences the stuff he brings out to drink all taste the same to my untrained palette.
at home, we keep various IPA's in stock, and more than a few different stouts.

The oldest recorded recipe known to man is a fermented grain beverage from the Sumerian civilization. ~4000 BC.
The oldest recorded food quality standard known to man is Reinheitsgebot, the German Beer Law of 1516, which is still in use today.
Beer has always been an economical way to use the excess harvest grains. It used up the surplus harvest to create a beverage that made otherwise shitty water potable and storable (bacteria and alcohol couldn't survive in beer).
IPA's? The Brits developed that so they could carry beer to India, hence the name. It was higher in alcohol content and heavily hopped, and could survive the long ship rides to their colonies in India.
The history of beer is pretty amazing.
