Columbine High School had an armed deputy

According to this account the presence of an armed guard at the school did little to deter the two killers or save lives. Read the account. His exchange of gunfire missed the killers.

"There are 67,000 elementary schools in the United States. Let's call it 400,000 full time guards, making perhaps $50,000 each. That's $20,000,000,000 per year just for the elementary schools. And since a smart, preparing, planning killer may just go down the street to the park, or the Little League fields, you can multiply that by a hundred or a thousand or ten thousand to protect every place. Who knows?"

They also had federal, state and local gun control laws and they did little to deter the two killers or save lives. In fact it did nothing.

Wait... I thought this was a crazy NRA idea. You mean we've had armed guards in schools for years?

By Daily Kos' math that would be about 6 per school. Seems just a 'tad' high to make the cost look ridiculous. Despite that, you could reallocate some of the money being spent on needless, redundant administrators and teacher coaches and the rest of the BS positions that we waste money on now. Done deal. Yeah, the teacher's union will scream but cops are union members too.

Because the laws are far too weak. It's time to get serious about tough, serious, nationwide restrictions.

Do you really think I care what tough serious restrictions you put in place?

"LaPierre’s rationale, that “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” led to his suggestion that there be “armed police officers in every school in this nation.”

Where to begin? Let’s assume, for the moment, that we decide to pay the multi-billion-dollar cost of placing one gun-toting officer in every school. What would the officer’s orders be? Shoot anyone who looks suspicious? If not, the officer would wait until an assailant — someone like Adam Lanza — displayed a gun or started firing. What sort of arsenal, and itchy trigger finger, would the officer need to be certain of shooting the assailant before the assailant shot the officer? How many twitchy, furtive, suspicious-looking UPS deliverymen would be tragically cut down in error?

So I guess there could be multiple officers in each school. For a glimpse of that dystopian future, recall the shooting a few months ago outside the Empire State Building. A gunman began firing, uniformed NYPD officers responded, they tried to take the gunman down — and nine innocent bystanders were wounded, all by police gunfire. Now imagine that sort of thing happening in a school, and think how many children would be killed by errant shots from police officers’ weapons.

Now consider the profile of these mass shooters, such as Adam Lanza. These disturbed young men are meticulous in planning their unspeakable crimes. Does it occur to the NRA that if a would-be shooter knew there would be armed police officers at the school (or movie theater, or grocery store), he might be sure to wear body armor? So will the school cops wear body armor, too? Do we require students to wear uniforms of Kevlar too?

The NRA will never, ever admit that the problem is too many guns, not too few. As Post columnist Fareed Zakaria pointed out so eloquently in his recent column, there is mental illness in all industrialized countries. There are violent video games in all those countries, too. But we’re the only country that makes guns, including military-style assault weapons, available to anyone who wants to buy them. This is not freedom. It is a tyranny of death and destruction — a tyranny of which the National Rifle Association is proud.

This may be the word I’ve been looking for: evil."

That argument also doesnt hold water. There are laws and regulations against running traffic lights. Doesnt stop people from running lights now does it?

No, they very likely wouldn't try it at all. Which is kind of the idea.

No it doesn't, but the presence of a police officer at the stop sign will ensure most people will stop. Not all but will serve as a deterrent.

When the shooting happened at Columbine, the security guard was sitting in his car eating lunch.

We should outlaw and ban ALL firearms....

Look how well that worked for heroin and cocaine!

Should probably burn all books that have references to firearms as well.

Oh yeah....ALL public school pupils and staff should be made to wear a uniform that could not possibly conceal and weapon of any sort. Of course it would have to be made of Tyvek to keep the pedophiles away and everyone would have to train themselves to take care of their restroom needs at home as the suit would hermetically sealed to the wearers body.

And talking...we should ban all talking especially in schools. These crazies get their ideas from somewhere and most likely heard someone say something once about killing people or firearms.

Finally, all competitive sports and academic clubs/teams should not be allowed.

We can't take the chance that someone might be smarter or better than anyone else and those activities only further pointing out who the losers are.

This is an NRA-fed myth. The sheriff's deputy at Columbine responded to a radio call by the janitor. He went outside the school and engaged the shooters in the parking lot. All his shots missed. (So much for the NRA/Hollywood ending). Then he retreated into the school.

Score: Shooters 13. Armed school Deputy Sheriff 0

The USA had an assault weapons ban in effect for 5 years when Columbine happened.

Connecticut has one of the most stringent assault weapons bans in place right now and has for years. http://www.jud.ct.gov/lawlib/law/firearms.htm

Just went out and purchased some kevlar lunch bags for both my kids. One has a picture of the Hulk on it. That is just a back up for their Kevlar For Kidz TM underwear, shirt and slacks they wear each and every day to school.

Our preschool has recommended some adorable Kevlar onesies by Carter - they are fire retardant, will stop a 9mm round at 15 feet and come in Eeyore gray and Winnie the Pooh yellow.

kind of funny how this is the talk of the town now. simply because the media has brought this to our attention... i definitely do not see any bias or attempts to spin facts here from our good ol media.

Good Lord I though I was making up a wildly fictional joke claiming there are Kevlar kids accessories - they exist. This is really sad when something that should be utterly absurd is real.

check out the Kevlar backpacks http://www.mediaite.com/tv/sales-of-childrens-bulletproof-backpacks-soar-after-newtown-tragedy/

unbelievable...

Bull, and Fareed Zakaria plagarizes. I wouldn't be too keen to listen to anything he has to say... it probably came from someone else.

People don't seem to realize that if we ban guns, criminals will still find a way to get them, and they will have them and we won't. Its a terrorists dream come true.
