Marine stands guard outside Tennessee school
Posted by: Sentry ()
Date: December 19, 2012 08:00PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVR) — A military veteran in Tennessee is helping ease fellow parents’ fears after the tragedy in Connecticut by standing guard outside his kids’ school.

On Monday, three days after the tragedy, Staff Sargeant Jordan Pritchard dug his old Marine Corps uniform out of the attic, put it on and has spent every morning since then outside Gower Elementary School.

He is not armed, but he hopes his presence sends a message.

“I’m doing this because we need hope man. We need hope. A believe in hope is larger than any weapon,” Pritchard said. “When parents come up to me and they’re crying and thanking me for being out here. There’s no job in the world that can pay me enough money to not do things for the kids and for the parents. You know.”

The school has given permission for Pritchard to stand guard as long as he wants.

So the guy does something he thinks needs doing, good for him. As opposed to most people who sit on their ass and whine why doesnt the government do something about ______, fill in the blank.

I think he exemplifies John Kennedys call to ask what you can do for your country.

So if he's not doing it to stop a shooting, what else would he be doing it for? To console scared parents? If so, then basically he is seeking attention. He is a self-centered narcissist who believes his uniform makes him important enough to stand in front of a school gathering accolades from scared soccer moms.

Great idea, let's not have jobs so we could watch our kids all day. Something bad might happen to them.

Say a school had two hundred kids and with any luck two hundred dads, I know prob less in todays have the kids and split world. But that might cost each dad one day out of a school year to stand out front or be an extra set of eyes for the school.

Most schools already have employees that are required for other duties and security is their secondary task. The dad would be free to do nothing but keep an eye out for trouble. Could he stop an armed intruder, probably not but better than nothing and he could sound the alarm.

One kid grown and on his own. No one is asking you to spend your entire week at the school, see post above. Stop thinking of yourself and maybe of others for a change. No one is that important at work they cannot miss one or two days a year. Besides most employers give up to four days off for volunteer work.

Yeah, what he's doing is pretty pointless. It speaks to the simple-mindedness of idiots who think one man standing in front of a school, unarmed, is protecting anything. He says he's doing it as a symbol of hope, but really, how is that inspiring hope? Is it like, "I hope one unarmed ex-Marine is enough to deter someone with murderous intent?"

Also, if he's not active duty, he shouldn't be wearing the uniform like that.

For all the difference he'd make in the event of an active shooter, his presence has absolutely no impact other than giving people a false sense of security. If he really wanted to do something helpful, he'd use his military experience to help the school evaluate its safety plans and and provide training on what to do in the event of an active shooter.

To me, it wreaks of Marshall Law. It gives people the impression that we need the military to protect our schools. That it's all because of a lack of authority at the school, not some rogue lunatic.

If I was a kid and I saw some guy in a marine suit (it's no longer his uniform) standing in front of my school, and I were to ask my mother why he was standing there, her response would be "some people get caught up in current events and lose touch with reality".

The only people who see this as productive or necessary have been traumatized by saturation reporting and being subjected to repeated images and sound bites.

Now that it is an agenda event, the reporting isn't going to cease. These unhinged people are going to be reacting in all kinds of inappropriate ways.

If I were a kid and my mother said to me, "Some people get caught up in current events and lose touch with reality," I would ask, "As opposed to historical events?"

And then I would ask for another mother.

I appreciate what the guy is doing. I hate people sending prayers and posting pictures on Facebook (with Newtown spelled wrong), so the fact he wants to do something is fine with me.

I do think the liability of a person no longer in the Marines standing there in a Marine uniform. Maybe he organizes some other vets in the area to stand watch in some agreed upon uniform (blue polo and khakis or something).

so just what have you done that you were not paid to do that makes the world a better place? No one has said this one lone guy will stop an armed killer. What has been said is one lone guy trying to make things better is better than no one standing out front. The guy thought to himself what could he do to help out and he did it. But being in Fairfax I should have expected people to think its always the governments job to do things we could possibly do for ourselves.

I agree with Mephisto that he shouldn't be wearing that uniform. Veterans are only authorized to wear Class A uniforms.

Really, what is he going to do? He isn't going to stop a shooter, and he can't even challenge and detain trespassers like a security guard hired by the school could do. Matter of fact, he might be considered trespassing himself.

As an active duty service member I have taken an oath to protect the people of the United States from all threats foriegn and domestic. I have respect for this man for trying to do uphold the oath he has taken even after he has been discharged from active duty. And for those of you who have never served I have this to say about his actions. Hope is a weapon often misunderstood. HOPE gives people strength to fight for an idea. What this man is doing is raising moral in his community. By giving these people hope for tomorrow he is giving them the strength to fight for the idea that schools should have better security. Protect the children better. Don't belittle this man for his ideals and the hope he is instilling in the parents of those students.

That oath doesn't include playing security guard in an unauthorized uniform, at a school that didn't invite you.

It also doesn't involve stopping a robbery at the local bank but it has happened and when the man was asked why he reacted to the robbery he said he took an oath to protect the people. Now yes he reacted to the an action that he saw unfolding and this man is reacting to an action in another location. We can look at them the same these men believed in protecting the people. I'm thinking you don't no what it is to be in the service. Now do you? And if you do I'm a little surprised that you wouldn't look at this as at least respectable on his part.
