The Sports Junkies stink, but somehow stay on the air

How they stay on the air, I don't know. I am not sised for their antics and I think they are but hurting and not money.

I don't understand the Junkies success. I started listening to them in the late 90's and stopped when they went over to WHFS. I enjoy other programming on WJFK but, not their show. Over the years, anytime I get into a conversation about sports talk radio with someone and mention the Sports Junkies...83% of the people I've talked to said they cannot stand the show. My sample size is roughly 125 people across all demographics.

Someone is listening to their show, but I don't know who. yes, the ratings say they are listened to, but no people actually do it. The poker open is a success because people want to go play poker, not because they may get a chance to sit next to JP and listen to him talk about himself for 3 hours.

The Junkies are like WTOP. People listen to them for a little bit in the car while driving to work.

CBS needs to just put a national show on in the mornings. Sure a lot cheaper than paying those idiots. The four main idiots get way too much money ($10 an hour is too much money) and then the other jerks who hang around them.

I wonder if they get more than LaVar?

There is certainly enough interest/like/dislike for the Junkies to easily sustain a lasting thread here similar to the Big O and Dukes & Mike O’Meara threads in FFXU General. There have got to be scores of threads on them dispersed throughout the site.

I think the reason there is no main Junkies thread is that nobody has ever taken ownership of one thread long enough for it to become established as the FFU Junkies thread. Take the Mike O’Meara thread; WTL, carried that thread (along with other people like McSmack and YoungDCian until it took on a life of its own. The exact same thing happened in the Big O and Dukes thread. Posters like myself, ChadIsFat and Hatemotor carried that thread until it got around 1000 posts. By then it had attracted enough hits from Google searchers (and thus more regular contributors) that it too became self-sustaining. Those threads just became the go-to places on the internet to talk about those shows. They might have a slow day or two posting-wise but whenever somebody has something to say about them, that is where they will do it.

If somebody wants there to be a similar FFXU Junkies thread, they will have to carry it (not allow it to fall off the top page) probably until it reaches the 500-1000 post mark. If nobody is willing to do that, threads like these will run their course and after a few days drop of the front page. A week or month later somebody will start a new one and the cycle will repeat itself. Still, this place is by far the best for discussion of local radio shows. Who wants to talk about the Junkies on a message board hosted and moderated by them? Nobody. Cary will let people say just about anything they want to here. That’s why these threads have the lasting power they do.

TheNorthman, but no one cares enough about their show to spend that kind of time. Every once in a while, some one else realizes how bad they are, makes a topic, everyone goes "yea, they're pretty bad", and the thread dies...

@ Northman

The most likely reason no one has claimed ownership of a junkies thread is because to do so would require someone to listen to them nearly everyday and bitch about them. However, they are so aweful, stale, old and tired that no one wants to do it. They don't even qualify as being train wreck bad.

What happens is an old listner might tune into their show once in a while, hear the same shit schtick they heard 5 years ago and come her to lament.

You're 100% right on that one. I tune in from time to time and every so often one of them (usually EB or JP) says something so dumb that I have to come here and post about it. But mist days I don't even listen.

The real WTF person on that frequency is Danny Rouhier. Seriously, what credentials does this guy have to host a sports talk radio show? He does funny impersonations...I like his Cowboy fan voice, "Dem boys are back in town!". But he has zero sports knowledge. Apparently, all you have to do to get a radio show (a media that is slowly dying) is watch sports for a few years and blog about it.

Danny's whole deal is he is a stand-up comedian, not a sports guy. He is supposed to be comic relief but he isn't very funny. He follows the JFK pattern of sports broadcasters: Ask a question to your audience and then comment on what they say. No need for insight.

JP graduated law school from the University of Maryland. They even did a segment where they opened up JP’s results from the Bar Exam. He failed the first time. That shit was funny as hell. The second time he passed. Still, he was probably 25-26 or so when he graduated. He’s 42 now, and as far as I know, has never practiced law a day in his life making his JD next to worthless at this point.

Cakes was stocking shelves at Toys R’ Us. I’m sure what JP and Lurch were doing but whatever it was it wasn’t paying them $250,000+/year. They’re just 4 middle class white-boys from PG county who enjoy talking about girls, booze and sports and “joining” on each other…and in 1996 I use to love these guys. 16 years later; not so much.

I have you now.

^^This^^

Danny R is a stand-up comic turned sports talk radio guy which makes his story pretty similar to Chad’s. Dukes, as I’m sure most of us know, was not a sports guy at all before WJFK’s format flip. He was just a radio guy who happened to be a die-hard Redskins AND really tight with the PD, Chris Kinnard. Those 2 are the same age and both came up together as Junkies’ interns in late 1998 or ‘99. Dukes is definitely a solid radio guy (anyone who can carry LaVarT for 5 hours a day is) but most certainly not a sports guy. But, like people have said here, JFK’s format is to throw out some dumb-ass question and open up the phone lines. Danny and Chad are qualified to do that, especially if they are in good with CK.

I have you now.

I haven't heard any specific rumors but sure, syndicated shows could arrive on 106.7 The Fan. I remember they use to have Ron and Rez and Bill O’Reilly and maybe even Jim Rome (though he may have been on 980AM). Still, there’s no reason that they couldn’t bring in nationally syndicated shows that I can think of. Shit 980 has Mike & Mike and The Herd with Colin Cowherd (last I checked at least).

Another thing I just thought of are appearances. Sure CBS could probably pay less for comparable ratings than they are for The Junkies but Dan Patrick is not going to show up to some Rickedy-Donk bar every Sunday before the Redskins games. Lavar, Chad, EB, Lurch-Papa, Danny R and Co. probably all have that sort of thing written into their contracts. The station charges Jammin Java (or wherever they are making an appearance) who in turn charges some idiots at the door. That could an added incentive to keep their talent local.

I have you now.

All they need is one solid local talent, with a side kick for the AM or PM drive. That one person could fulfill whatever appearance de jour is needed.

I don't disagree that having local "talent" at local bars is a good thing. I do not know how many appearances the "talent" is making now. I guess at least two Junkies go out before Redskins games and LaVar does a few with Dukes at a bar here and there. One talent with a sidekick should be able to cover it.

Another Junks fan here. Been listening to them for over 10 years. Listen to almost every podcast (except their game show Wednesday segment), and they are the only radio show/podcast I subscribe to.

Always entertained, and they always make me laugh. Agree with comments on JP. He's a drag on the show (no surprise he's typically behind the Wednesday games), but the other three are hilarious.

Also a fan of BDK. Never miss his movie reviews and pleased to see him doing so well. He's a good kid and deserves it.

If you don't like the Junks, don't listen.
