Yes, it does equal gun crime. Whether it's an equivalent level is another matter. But that's not what he said. Of course the gun-related crime rate is lower given the restrictions on guns (duh). They still have gun crime. They also still have occasional mass shootings. And, independent of guns, it doesn't mean that they don't have violent crime. In fact, the violent crime rate is higher than in the US.
As are the rates for robbery, assault, vehicle theft, etc.
Look at the murder rates for Russia or Mexico. Both countries where private ownership of guns is very tightly restricted. Their murder rates are much higher than ours.
Beyond that, gun crime and death rates are not evenly distributed across the population in the US. Normalize the numbers to account for our minority population and we aren't much higher if any versus any other OECD country.
