Does anyone remember this toy from the 1980s?
Posted by: Toy Collector ()

I guess technically it was a game. The setup featured a disc about 2 feet in diameter and a tower structure slightly taller than 2 feet which had a spindle in the middle that spun the disc. On top of the tower attached via a rail on an arm was a twin-engined airplane and at the base of the tower was a joystick and an eyepiece. The joystick would enable you to move the plane back and forth on the rail and the eyepiece was a bombardiers sight that gave you a view out of the bottom of the plane.

On the end of the joystick was a button which would enable you to drop buoys about half the size of your thumb out of the bottom of the plane. On the surface of the disc were various accident scenes (a shipwreck, an auto accident, etc.) and there was a cup countersunk into each accident scene.

So, the object was you'd turn on the spindle motor and the disc would revolve and then you'd look through the eyepiece with your hand on the joystick trying to maneuver the plane in place to drop a buoy into as many cups as possible. Does anyone remember the name of this toy/game?

I remember when all the 7-11s carried the Garbage Pail Kids cards right by the cash register. Eventually they started requiring adults only purchases, and then the cards disappeared altogether.

YES!!! Garbage Pail kids were the shit! Those things were really popular for about a year or so then people just got sick of them and that was it. I still have some in a box at my parents' house I think.

The best 80's board game was Survive. I still have it.

Lol! I have one of those taken apart "inthe basement"...not the right toy.

I remembered the Chutes Away toy but could not find it with multiple searches of a variety of things - impressed that someone got it.

Way cool.

What about Suckerman? We had the glow-in-the-dark ones and used to make up all kinds of goofy contests and games with them. And man, you could really whip somebody by swinging it, that shit stung.

I just know things.

What was your favorite game as a kid, eesh?

I loved Battleship, Risk and Monopoly.

But, Risk was my favorite; I remember games going for hours.

God, how I loved taking over the world.

My friends used to call me Napoleon.

I was ruthless.

Why did the kids from the 50's get all the good toys? This one came with 4 small bottles of radioactive material, including Uranium.

I never liked games. I liked action figures, GI Joe and then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Banning them was one of the early steps toward the pussification of America.

All the cool dangerous stuff is gone now. *sniff*

Kids today make it to adulthood. All of them. Big problem.

Stratego was okay, but we were more into Axis and Allies.

Re. Dark Tower, that game was fucking awesome. Goes through a shitload of batteries, though.

Broadsides and Boarding Parties was simple but the props make it worth it.

Wow. I'd forgotten about that toy. I had one.

Crossbows and catapults was another fun one, but you needed to have a tiled or wood floor so the carroms would slide when you used the crossbow. We used to put as many rubber bands on the crossbow so when you shot the carrom it would blow the opponents protective wall into bits instantly.

I actually hated Risk. It took too long and got boring. It was a big war of attrition. Axis & Allies required alot more planning, coordination, and strategy.

Axis & Allies requires a lot of strategic thinking, yet the dice mean you can still win or lose on luck. It does take forever to play.

About 80s game commercials Connect 4 is the one that sticks in my memory. "Pretty sneaky, sis."
