Best handguns buys for $1000
Posted by: Pistole ()

Question:

I am looking to spend no more than $1000 to get some handguns. I'd like to get at least 3 for that (really hoping for 4). I was thinking a .22 (Ruger perhaps), a 9mm (with at least a 15 round magazine capacity) and something with a larger caliber. This is strickly for home defense purposes.

Anyone have any advice on gun types, calibers, manufactures, etc.

Thanks,

Pistole

Forgot to add another question:

Is the National Gunshow in Dec the place to get deals once I figure out what I'm buying? The local gun stores are really high priced. I know I can drive to PA and save at least 10% (and maybe even 20%) if I'm buying at a store so I'm thinking I can get that kind of pricing at the gunshow.

Thanks

Yopu only need two firearms for home defense.

#1.......Browning Hi Power .40 cal. pistol

#2.......Mossburg 12 guage pump shotgun.

Gun show has better prices.

Two problems with your selections.

1 I don't think you can get both for 1000 bones.
2 You can have a 357 Magnum and it will do you know good, if you don't practice shooting. Any handgun owner should have a practice gun to shoot with, typcally a 9mm. 9mm ammo is cheap, while other calibers are more expensive.

If your looking for new, there are NO deals out there. Ammo is just as expensive. Deal with it.

Also, I would add .357 revolver.

I would buy only one gun for now and REALLY learn how to shoot. A missed round is wasted ammo. The best gun for home defense is a gun you really know how to shoot.

Strictly for home defense, you will need a shotgun. A high caliber pistol (45 or 40) and a 9mm to target shoot for practice. Having these weapons will be useless unless you are used to shooting firearms.

Now what about outside of the home? If you want to get into self defense and not just home defense, it gets even stickier.

Way more details (size of home, apartment or house, expectations, situations you expect to defend against, etc) are needed for the type of recommendations you ask for.

From what you told me. Buy a 9mm and a shotgun. You want more specifics, you need to GIVE more specifics.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 7+1 Mossberg JIC. I'm looking strickly for handguns. More than one of us, so I'd like more than one.

As far as gun shows being cheaper, depends on where the gun show you go is. If you go to one in rural PA, it will be cheaper than a gun show in the metro DC area. You can typically negotiate prices on weapons (not usually on handguns, though).

In higher populated and urban areas, the prices tend to be higher since, those areas typically have buyers with more money. Not so in the more rural areas.

But, if you buy from a gun store, you have someplace to go back to if you want to trade up or if you have problems with or questions about the weapon. Not so at a gun show.

Thanks. I'm pretty well set for rifles and have a Mossberg and a Remington o/u for shotguns. I'm thinking .22 and 9mm to save money on ammo and to share rounds between rifles and handguns. I have a couple of .22 rifles. Sometime in the future, might look into a 9mm semiautomatic rifle, again to conserve on ammo costs but have enough rifles/shotguns for now. I currently have only one handgun, a 10 round 9mm.

So specifically, I'd like something with a light recoil (thinking the .22), another higher capacity 9mm and a .40 or larger. I was hoping to get the .22 for somewhere less than $200 if possible, the 9mm for the $300's and having about $500 for the larget caliber. Don't know if that's doable. I'd forgo the 9mm since I already have one but I'd still like at least 3 new reliable handguns for that price.

Well, I own 4 rifles and 4 handguns. I don't think you will find anything in the price ranges you are looking for. At least not anything I would feel safe about using in a situation where you are thinking about defending your life!

For a 9mm, you are looking at 550 minimum (at least in NOVA) and for a larger caliber, 650 bones.

I think you need to decide how much your life is worth and go from there.

As far as a .22, I fired a colt 45 model that someone had modded to fire .22 with a hair trigger. I never had so much fun firing a weapon! No recoil and because of that I was making a can dance at 35 yards with rapid fire. Gave me respect for the caliber. It may not have near as much stopping power, but if I can empty a clip of .22 into a good target grouping at a rapid rate, who needs one higher caliber shot?

I digress.

You can get a Glock 27 (.40) for around $500. This is the gun I carry, nice and compact.

I agree with shotgun for home defense, but it should be a tactical model that is easier to maneuver than a hunting shotgun.

I wouldnt do the .22. That is more of a target pistol. If you looking for your wife, I would look at the a .32 or .380. These are nice calibers for the dainty arm with little/no recoil.

DONT BUY AT THE GUN SHOW!!!

vaguntrader.com is the best place for firearms in the Commonwealth.

Decide what you want out of a handgun first, then price accordingly.

Thanks. Any recommendation on manufacturer and models? Perferrably something with at least 12 round capacity. If I decide to buy more later, then I might consder a revolver but for now I'm looking at semi-automatic handguns.

Also, .22 rounds are the cheapest to get. How comparible price-wise would .38's be?

There are competively priced guns from local dealers at gunshows. There is a small show this weekend at the Prince William County Fairgrounds. Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 10-4. You can only buy a handgun in your state of residence. Federal law.

Anything you can find at the gun shows or in shops around here you'll find cheaper online even factoring in paying the FFL fee. At least assuming that you're not looking for something unusual. Decide what you want and then wait for a deal at Bud's, etc., or go by what you can get a deal on that fits your purposes. At times you can find some deals locally and, obviously, if they have what you want at a good price you should do that but usually not.

Smith and Wesson has a really nice .22 cal m&p variant out these days. I own one for cheaper range use and to get people started. It's kind of nice to have a .22 on a similar platform, like it feels like a typical higher caliber handgun. My friend owns a beretta neos .22 but it just doesn't feel right to me.

Of course both these are higher than $200, unless you find a good deal on something used I think you need to raise your budget just a tad if you are trying to buy 3 guns or more.

Browning Buckmark and Ruger Mark series are the absolute best rimfire pistols out there.

For a budget 9mm, I would get one of the new Smith & Wesson SD9.

For a budget 45ACP, I would get a Ruger P345.

Of course, you could try out one of the new S&W Governors, it fires 45ACP, 45 Colt, and 410 bore.

Anyone know about a FNH's FNX 40? All I could find is that FNH is Belgian and this seems to be favored for CC use. I'm not worried about CC, just something with stopping power and a high capacity mag. This one has 14 +1, which is adequate. Looks like I can pick one up locally for probably $550.

Glock 19 or 23 for $500.

If you have a VA driver's license, you're not going to be able to buy a gun in another state, unless it's a private party sale.

Glocks are definitely not glitter guns.

The following is a picture of the Jimenez Arms JA-9 9mm. Not only is it glittery, but it happens to be cheap. This one can be had for less than $175 each at any gun show...

Gee JoeBob,
Don't be showing guns in public. You scared the poor lady and it doesn't help. People get weirded out by gun nuts cause they act stupid and immature while online. The boys think they are cool cause they bought guns and have to show off.
They really are compensating for insecurities and manhood.
Look who's committing these horrendous crimes. Boys seeking attention. Boys like FBO, John Galt, Dame Brainless and others boasting about their guns are somewhat like the nutcases commiting the horrindous crimes. As you mature you will probably feel embarrassed and really stupid.

Not pissed, just qualifying the source. Though YOUR idiocy speaks for itself.

I don't have a permit so my evil 'assault weapons' and other guns will be stealthily hidden from YOUR view. Hey, maybe we're neighbors! Muhahahaha lol

Your evil assault weapon doesn't scare me. I've had a couple hundred pointed at me years ago and one did ruin my day. What concerns me is why you're feeling insecure to pocess one. Going to war? Mine was just a tool to finish a job.

Boasting about owning an assault rifle is a little concerning to me also. You understand the intentions of men in combat but civilians stating they are armed and may be your neighbor sounds like a threat with his post.

Although I'm a Glock guy, if you want to spend $1000, and maybe a bit more, perhaps $1200, the Kimber Custom Carry 1911 .45 caliber. You can't miss with it, no recoil and a perfect firearm in every aspect.

Glocks are 1/2 plastic for plastic people who shoot paper.
Kinda funny how boys become fixated on brand names.

Kimber is manufactured for rich kids who believe that the more you pay the better it is. Colt or Remington govt. issues are working man tools. Why pay more for show. Maybe gun collectors.

It shouldn't. Simple point was that evil "assault rifles" or for that matter any other guns aren't reflected in the CCW permit records so publishing those permit holders doesn't really tell you much. You're the ones who seem to view it as such based on your own fears given all of your (same old) posts to that same end. Why it does is on you.

Sorry to disappoint but no threat here. I've shot small- and large-bore competitively since I was a kid. Through high school (yes, back in the day they even had rifle ranges in Fairfax County high schools! GASP!), ROTC, in service matches, and still do now and then. There was a time not that long ago when that was viewed as something to be proud of not as a menace. Sad to say that time seems to be long gone. Funny, we never seemed to have these kinds of incidents back then even though we had the same guns. Go figure...

Anyway, sounds like you have some left-overs that you need to digest. They have more help for that sort of thing now than they did when we were in you know. Maybe a trip over to Bethesda is in order? They have a new facility down at Belvoir that's supposed to be nice. Wouldn't want you to go off one day. I mean we know how touchy some of you guys are after all of the Post Office shootings and that kinda thing. Now that I think about it what's your address? Maybe we should put dot there just to be safe.

That's the great thing about gun nuts -- they have to brag. Otherwise they don't get the much-needed testosterone boost. The normal, everyday (non-nut) gun owners are the ones you don't even know about because they don't have the psychological need to brag all the time.

> As you mature you will probably feel embarrassed and really stupid.

Don't bet on it. Most of these monkeys are already past their mid-20s, when the male brain fully matures. They're about as "mature" as they're going to get. :-)

Here watch this video. Even though the lady gets pretty much smacked down, you can use her talking points to form a somewhat intelligent discussion. Pay close attention.

Most reasonable people understand that he was posting a list of options. Durrr

And people who actually understand the subject know how silly and clueless you look talking about "bullets." If you're going to be anti-something you should at least know wtf you're babbling about.

We called them clips before it became"gun correct"
And I do know a little about bullets. They make holes where you don't want them.
And hurt.
And if Dame wants to off himself he has quite a few options.
So many guns but so little time.

I would recomend a nice .357 revolver Colt, Smith & Wesson or Ruger . You get what you pay for ! I wouldn't trust my life on a cheap piece of crap gun. Only niggers and beeners buy chrome and gold plated shit guns , I wouldn't give 2 bucks for one or allow it in my safe.

Give the man a cigar. M14. Even with composite stock it was to heavy for a walkabout.

I started building my arsenal after 9/11. No terrorist threat at my house.
I have at least 2 guns for every room with ar-15s everywhere. Joined a small militia for training as this country sinks into oblivion. I have spent my savings in guns and supplies waiting for the time we will be proven right. I now have 14 Glock 17s, 4 Glock 19s
10 ar-15s
4 12 gauge shotguns
And a few I better not mention becaus the ATF might be interested.
Try to keep constituent types so I can stock up on ammo.
Wife kids me saying the more guns the less friends. Thats OK because the less they know the better off we are.
I love my wife because she can buy guns and I can't. Thank god for women.
Off to work but be safe and sounds like a few others here are getting ready for this year.

Seems like you are overcompensating for some deficiency by continuing to point out that firearm owners have low self esteem regarding their manhood.

One or two posts, sure....you are just pointing out your unfounded belief. A litany of repetition, however, seems to indicate your own actual masculine deficiency.

So, do you have a small penis or are you just sort of a wimpy and puny dork that still gets disrespected even in adulthood? Which is it?

Any real man would own a Desert Eagle XIX in 50ae. If you are going to carry then carry the most powerful and best. If you are gonna be tough then carry big.
