I ate undercooked chicken -- help
Posted by: Ashley ()
Date: November 20, 2012 11:48PM

I have reason to believe that I consumed undercooked chicken because I had no thermometer to test the correct cooking temperature. Am I at high risk for salmonella/food poisoning? Thanks in advance.

My advice is to procure some new undergarments, as the ones you have on now will most likely be soiled.

When you saw it was undercooked why did you eat it? You don't need a thermometer, if it is bloody raw don't eat it. When you saw it wasn't done why didn't you just cook it some more???

You come here instead of Web MD, or some other shit?

If you have hemmohrraging diarrhea and throwing up like gangbusters, you were food poisoned. If not, you know to cook the chicken loads more!

I hope you rinsed it under the faucet before cooking it. It's always a good idea to rinse meats before cooking.

The salmonella risk is mostly due to fecal matter during the slaughter and processing. I think the real risk is with whole chicken, and bone-in parts. Boneless skinless breasts are probably fairly clean coming out of the factory.

Another troll, I am afraid. But if you aren't, you will know within 18 hours. Trust me, food born illness is a horrible way to lose 15 lbs. the quick way. I spent a lousy Christmas in the INOVA Urgent Care off Main Street on an IV, and it was no joke. The IV made me feel a lot better but damn, that IV will make you freezing cold.

Actually a lot of cooks advise you don't do that anymore. When you do that, you tend to splash water around and guess what, the water contains that contamination. If you cook it properly, you won't have to worry about it.

Whole chickens, the same applies with red meat. Whole cuts of meat tend to be cleaner because less surface area is exposed to contamination. That is why there is such a problem with hamburger meat vs other meats. All that surface area getting ground up together. Like mixing yeast in dough.

With a whole chicken, there is less surface area exposed to the meat, unless you just get a bad chicken in the first place. Those packaged breasts are more exposed to contamination than in a whole chicken. Times change and new information comes out. Washing poultry isn't necessary, if you are a messy person.

Your best bet is to smell it. If it smells bad it's a non-starter. If not, cooking it properly will do fine.

Also, bone in parts are also better because that means there is less meat and the tendency to under-cook goes down. Also the bone tends to heat up, cooking the meat from the other side as well. Skinless, if you take the time to remove the skin, the breast underneath will be clean. Again assuming the meat isn't funny. But if it is, all the washing in the world won't help.

You are wrong on sooo many levels it's not funny. I'll bet you cook duck thoroughly as well.

Why would you get sick? It's actually something that grows inside of you.
