I've done both.
The problem with working 80 hour weeks for a significantly larger amount of money is that you can really only do that for so long before it starts taking a toll. Its not just what you would call the "quality of life" thing, but it really can take a toll on your social life, your family life and most importantly, on your health.
If you're working 80 hour weeks, something has to give and unless you are seriously disciplined you will either go without sleep or exercise or both.
There are months where I put in 100 hour weeks or more but eventually I just have to walk away or turn down work to just take a break.

This thread is why I became an hourly contractor; paid for the work done, period.

Considering that neither salary is going to make you independently wealthy, it comes down to what you want to do with your time, not the amount of money you make.
I could quite frankly live comfortably for around $40k. Everything else is just gravy.
Work your ass off as much as you can while you're still young, and use that extra income to keep yourself out of debt, to pay down your mortgage, build up a nest egg, and acquire all the toys you want. As you get older, you'll need less income to feel comfortable and you won't feel (or be) indentured to your job.
There's also a third way -- Instead of working 80 hours a week for $120k, work 40 for $70k and go to school so you can eventually work 40 for $120k. You can work hard or work smart.

The hypothetical doesn't provide enough information. Is the pay net of taxes or is that gross pay? Are we assuming that the effective tax rate on both incomes is the same?

The downside of being a contractor is that the best projects are reserved for staff. Those projects usually advance company trade secrets and special knowledge which need to be retained in-house. I know quite a few have left the business by their 50's. It's also much harder to find work as a IT manager consultant. An associate of mine makes $215/hr but is out of work quite a bit despite having to go out of town for many projects.

I'm a gubba ment worker(GS14) making $133,264 and only work 40 hours a week(sometimes more depending when work requires it)!!!!
