I am an engineer who makes 100k, works hard, believes in personal accountability and frugality. Many of the things that the republicans believe in I believe in. I want to stop wasting money in the government. I dont want to stop the government though and that is where the republicans are mislead. I do think entitlements need to be slowed so that as a percentage of our economy they slowly come down.

I completely disagree. Elections work in cycles, and if you look at the vote tallies in 2008 vs. 2012, the gap between the GOP and Democrat candidate narrowed tremendously. This isn't any sort of demographic message, it's simply politics. We had eight years of Clinton, eight of Bush, and now eight of Obama. The next election cycle will be the real test. If a Republican is elected President in 2016, then the cycle will be proven to still exist.

I think Bush got lucky (albeit at the expense of thousands dying). As long as the Republicans are at the beck and call of corporations and billionaires; as long as they aim to appease the far right at the expense of blocs of minorities, they will win at the state level but lose nationally.

As impressive as china's growth has been over the past 40 years since nixon, it is because it came from nothing, an agrarian populated nation. It is an impressive industrial nation, but it doesn't "create" new things. Conclusion, America will come to the party later than China but soon enough that China will not be the only play on Energy in the 21st century and will therefore continue to be the worlds most diverse and powerful economy for the foreseeable future.

In other words, I'd start betting on interstellar travel before shorting the US economy long haul.

A lot of the technology and engineering for which they ripped off from others. But at a practical level that's a smart way to do it in my book. Our own fault for giving away strategic technology like GE and others have done in order access their market. They're now at the stage or soon will be where they don't need us anymore.

Cheap labor is a factor, but China also just has an effectively infinite supply of NEW labor. They can build entire cities where fields used to be, in a matter of months, and have 250,000 people begin working in brand new factories, overnight. I can't put into words how frustrating it is to hear people say "Wind can't work, if it could, we'd be using it already" or "You can't put a windmill on a car" as if we should close the book on these technologies because they do not immediately replace and supplant oil while maintaining the old resource model of acquisition, processing and distribution. Wind and Solar are suited to a decentralized, distributed, not distribution, model. In other words, solar and wind will power homes and businesses independent of a grid. You might also want to re-read what I wrote in the context that I am a progressive and in favor of extensive research in this country for battery and renewable technologies.

My points on China are being read in the mode of coming down from partisan bickering during an election. Re-read them knowing the above that I just said. China has improved in many ways economical, and they are in no way an economic communist government anymore, however look at the facts... every year HUNDREDS of chinese scientists continue to funnel OUT of China however they can to live in Europe and the US. Why? Because as capitalist as they are becoming there, socially they are still not a free country and they are restrictive to creativity and innovation for the individual.

The hope of the American dream still is the beacon for inventors, and invention not efficient production is the key to the future of America. Nothing China is doing at this time worries me about that.

PS your argument about Chinas growth is flawed and reminds me of what people said during the "rise of Japan" when everyone thought THEY would replace us by now. Economies are decentralized today, it is a global world, and yet America is still the most powerful and diverse of ALL economies and NYC is still the global financial capital and will remain that way for centuries to come.

China's capacity to create is impressive, but as we learned in the 2000s building for the sake of building only gets you to the point of a baseline. You HAVE to create real new industries to grow otherwise you can only grow as quickly as your market base and that is just dumb growth (see Walmart). Real growth comes from creating the new product, service, or idea that revolutionizes the world (and no that doesnt just mean a gizmo).

Take this thought with you, America's bio-medical, genomics, and bio-engineering industries alone are the same size as China's entire economy excluding Construction.

I understand what you are trying to say and I agree with you -- to a point. And I think I can underline that point to you by your own example above.

Rocket scientists didn't "come to America" -- they were brought here by the U.S. government. The Soviets took their share as well. They were put to work by massive government spending in first the military's missile program and then by N.A.S.A.

The blessing that we have enjoyed in this country is not that we are more blessed by some magical property that only Americans possess. We have had a government that has been stable and that has invested heavily in our own best interest. Its not just the freedom from government, but the freedom that good government has given us.

Its a point that is lost on many when they have been immersed in the popular ideology of conservative talking points.

Actually, the German "Rocket Scientists" came to the U.S. after WWII because of Operation Paperclip. It was not entirely "voluntary" on their part. We wanted to deny German scientific and engineering prowess to the Soviets as much as possible. The Germans knew that there would be little funding for research in a flattened country. It was mutually beneficial.

A couple of points with respect to the U.S. / Chinese situation. Technological revolutions occur over months, not years. It won't take the Chinese decades to achieve economic parity with the U.S., just years.

There are more Gifted and Talented (GT, high IQ) Chinese students than there are students of every stripe in U.S. K12 education. This is a matter of simple demographics: a country of 1.3 Billion people (China) vs. a country of 315 million (the U.S.). It only takes a handful of smart people to design and engineer the next great .

WE have the finest educational system in the world, especially our post-secondary schools. But we produce too many marketing majors and lawyers. We need to encourage interest in STEM fields.

There is, however, a phenomenon that may very well slow if not impede the rise of China. The Chinese had no age of exploration, that period in their history where they ventured forth, established colonies, and built the systems necessary to sustain them. Some scholars maintain that this pattern of development is essential to creating a culture of innovation. Time will tell.

Indeed! We've been extremely fortunate geographically, because two oceans have mad it difficult to invade the U.S.

Through circumstances I'm not going into, I have some familiarity with how the KGB prepared its agents and even ordinary Soviet citizens for visiting the U.S. Soviet mythology painted us as a country of extremes: pockets of huge wealth surrounded by seas of acute poverty. To process this reality, the KGB would tell first time Soviet visitors to the U.S. that "we were flattened in the Great Patriotic War, while the U.S. hasn't had a land war on its soil in over a hundred years." To the Soviets, that explained our place in the world.

Well! Okay, on behalf of all "moron libs" everywhere (including Mitt's future planet) I will reply.

No one has called Romney a "lier", because there is no just thing. He is, however, a liar. Here are several examples, all from the first debate on Oct. 3, the one Romney supposedly "won".

1) North American Energy Independence, with the Keystone XL pipeline, will create about 4 million new jobs. Let's start with "North American". Americans don't refer to themselves as "North Americans", Canadians do. Keystone would be build, owned, and operated by TransCanada. The CEO of this Canadian company has estimated that 200,000 jobs would be created in the U.S. during construction. These are not permanent jobs. Nor is the oil destined for the U.S. market, it's going to China. Why then ship it to the Gulf? Our environmental regulations and Red State Rubes make it easier than going through Alberta and British Columbia. This does nothing to make us energy independent. Makes the Canadians a couple more loonies though.

2) Romney's contention that Obama was planning to increase taxes on the middle class by up to $4,000. The study that Team Romney claimed this "fact" came from was "A Simple Measure of the Distributional Burden of Debt Accumulation" done by the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute. The study is about paying down the national debt. It makes no statement about any Obama tax plan whatsoever.

3) Obama has amassed almost as much debt as all other presidents combined, so said Mr. Romney. When Obama took office, the national debt was $10.626 trillion. Currently, it's just over $16 trillion. That $5 trillion difference is hardly "almost as much" as all previous administrations combined.

4) Romney's claim that Obama cut $716 billion from Medicare, with the implication that the money was in receipient benefits. Obamacare takes $716 billion from reimbursements to insurance companies, a source of funds Ryan also tapped into in his budget plan.

Had enough. Want more? There are hundreds of examples -- that pesky Interwebs thing makes it trivial to fact check.

Here's the rub. Obama's been president for 4 years and, what, three days. Where's all the socialism he promised us? Where is the government nationalization and takeover of industry? I work for a public institution, but my significant other's professional firm still has the same partners at the helm. The only time I've heard the National Anthem of the Soviet Union in all this time was when Chris Plante played it, and he incorrectly indentified it as "The Internationale".

What free stuff am I missing out on? Name three things so I can see if I need to go down to the welfare office and pick them up. I don't need the obamaphone, however. I've got an iPhone 5.

And say, I've haven't seen a single death panel yet. Weren't these supposed to be on every street corner by now? I know a few people I'd like to haul before one.
