The answer depends completely on how good you are with each in a dynamic, emergent environment. Either are no good if you foul a reload or get disarmed in the middle of a fight. You should take a training class in each and then decide.
This is not overkill, it's the responsible thing to do and well worth the time and money.

If you've got the cash, you'll definitely benefit from the best training you can get: http://www.gunsite.com/main/
Skill is always more valuable than equipment.

It not a lot of guns you need, lots of ammo.If Obama wins I wish I had an FFL and a table at the Gun Show in Chantilly next week, the dealers are going to make a killing.

If this is going to be your first firearm I'd say go with the Mossberg first
and add on a short home-defense barrel. No reason to stop there though as you can
add to your collection later. Instead of an AR I'd recommend a Ruger
Mini-14 because it's so much cheaper and functions almost the same.
With after market accessories you can turn it into a very nice home
defense gun and save a bundle. IMHO, a reliable pump shotgun is the
foundation of a good home defense plan.

They're not much cheaper anymore. Nice guns, though.

Any decision you make at age 18 is likely to be wrong.

You will piss away the money. Sorry about that.

If you have to ask rifle or shotgun, you are just retarded.

Long guns are a bad idea for home defense. Get a handgun. Much harder to take away from you, much easier to navigate in a home with it.

And never go after a noise in the night. Get your family, get your gun, call the cops, and wait.

Hadn't looked at prices in quite a while and you're right. Glad I bought
mine back in the day. I paid $350.00 NIB, added an ATI Tactical stock
and a holographic sight.

Buy the Mossberg first, it is a relatively simple and inexpensive gun.

The AR-15 is a bit more complex due to all the options out there. Research everything before you make a purchase.

The problem with handguns for home defense is penetration. Plus, a shotgun round is going to push the attacker away from you, which is something you're going to want in a close-quarters self-defense situation.

Another plus is, one point-blank shotgun round will probably kill the intruder. One point-blank pistol round will probably just wound the intruder, which he'll probably sue you for. Multiple pistol rounds will look like excessive force.

Remember, in Virginia, you have to make a reasonable attempt to escape an ARMED intruder before using deadly force. If you just blast away at the guy crawling through your window, you're liable land yourself in legal hot water.

Get the 12 gauge. People that use AR-15s for home defense are mall ninjas.

Listen, living in a densely populated area, where most people live in apartments, townhomes, etc.....you have to worry about overpenetration through walls. If you shoot 5.56 and it goes through your wall and into someone else's home, you are liable for anything that happens.

Get a 12 gauge, load it with birdshot, no smaller than BB. Birdshot is not preferable in home defense, BUT if you load it with buckshot or slugs, there is a good chance it will overpenetrate and go into someone else's home.

Not only that, but you are talking about a large price difference too. About $250-400 for the Mossberg, vs. $700-2000 for an AR-15 clone.

You also have to consider ammunition costs, shotshells are fairly cheap, whereas .223 or 5.56 can be quite expensive.

I have the Mossberg 500 Chainsaw version. SWAT teams use them as door breachers. It is very fun to shoot but many ranges won't allow pistol grip shotguns because they require weapons to be shoulder fired. Firing slugs through it is a blast.

For home protection, I like my FiveSeven. The 5.7x28 is basically the same slug but less pressure than 5.56 NATO. It is nice to have twenty rounds per clip and I worry less about over penetration through walls with the ammo that I use in the clips for home use. It's brother, my PS90, is even more appealing for home protection given the 50 round magazines. There is an old home defense adage, "if there is one perpetrator there are two more, if there are two there are four more." I have seen many youtube clips of home burgulries in progress and it looks like they often work in groups of three or four.

The 5.7x28mm upper receivers are available for about $699.00. All you need to do is purchase a a full lower receiver which can be had for between 179.00 to 289.00 depending on your preferred maker (Colt, DPMS etc.). When you put one together this way, you have an AR57 with a fifty round mag that sits across the top of the weapon and the shells discharge out the bottom of the where the 30 round AR15 clip normally sits. If you want to save your brass just take apart an old ar15 clip by removing the spring and you have a brass catcher.

On a serious note, no matter what you choose, get training and know the law. Virginia is not a Castle State. Before you raise a weapon you must know what is happening around you, how your life is in immediate danger and where you are going to place a bullet.

Just imagine what it will be like discharging a weapon inside a dark bedroom. Your eyes will be blinded by the flash, your ears will be painfully ringing. If you missed, a perpetrator may lunge towards the flash and kill you with your own weapon. Children tend to run towards danger. Firing a second shot while flash blinded may kill your child or someone you love.

IMO anyone who buys a gun needs to come to peace with all of the decisions they would make given as many scenarios as possible. Most gun fights occur between people who are less than ten feet away from eachother. A perpetrator can close a ten foot gap before most newbies could chamber a round, place the shot and discharge the weapon.

For more on the discussion of home defense with shotguns and carbines consult www.theboxotruth.com There is no replacement for training.

The 5.7 is not a good round for self-defense. It was designed to be used for armor penetration with the steel core rounds, however civilians can only get the target ammo. The FN 5.7 is an expensive range toy for mall ninjas like yourself.

I have no problem with people owning guns, though I have to admit I would prefer that buying guns requires having previously passed something like a "use test" (well-regulated (nee "trained") militia" etc).

Having said that, however, I would think investing in really solid doors/locks both on external portals AND internal ones and, perhaps, something like gorilla glass on windows would be a MUCH more effective AND safe solution to unwanted intruders.

Should you find yourself in possession of birdshot for home defense, you can easily modify the shells. Birdshot will seriously anger a perpetrator and it will not necessarily put you in a good situation when faced off against three angry burgulars and you have only two birdshot shells left in the chamber.

What I do with my leftover Birdshot shells (I always wind up with too darn many of them) is to open the end of the shell with a razorblade, pour out the tiny lead shot into a dish, reduce the plastic standoff between the shot and the powder (putting it back in of course) and then mix the birdshot back into the shell with melted crayons warmed with a heatlamp or a coffee cup warmer. The result is a heavy lead-wax slug that will drop the perpetrator but has much less wall penetration ability. The crayon wax seals the end of the shells. Youtube has good instructional videos for salvaging the poor purchase of birdshot.

Eesh, you're trolling.. The Mossberg Chainsaw is a Cruiser, it just has a convenient handle.

In terms of fabrication, go ahead and propose birdshot for home defense, good God!

The reason for quantity of bullets is because when a weapon is raised, it is to be used; it also makes my range time more productive. More shooting less reloading.

Modifying ammunition is just asking for trouble. Go to any gun shop and just buy home defense ammunition, save the bird shot for the clay disks ... or the birds if thats your thing.

No it will not.

Check out Box O'Truth. Anything sufficent to disable a human being will punch through drywall.

If you're justified in using deadly force, you're justified in using as many rounds as are necessary. You just have to stop shooting when you're reasonably sure they're no longer a threat.

> Remember, in Virginia, you have to make a
> reasonable attempt to escape an ARMED intruder

No, you don't. They have to be a threat to life or permanent injury by the reasonable person standard.

> If you just blast away
> at the guy crawling through your window, you're

Correct. And it's immoral to boot. You can't just kill someone for coming into your house. But if they're armed or approach you and you're not reasonably able to defend yourself (e.g. elderly or female or small), then your life is reasonably in danger and you should defend yourself.

The important thing is, don't go LOOKING for a confrontation. It's foolish and dangerous. If you hear that noise downstairs, get your family, get your gun, call the cops, and wait for them to come to you, or hopefully leave on their own.

I reload ammo, and save a fortune doing it. I have controls in the environment I use for reloading. The lead-wax loads are really an impressive shell for plinking. I came across the modification after ordering 500 Birdshot shells that were incorrectly listed on cheaperthandirt as slugs.

To each his own, but don't knock it until you have tried it.

Reloading ammo is one thing, your retarded suggestion about pouring wax into a shotshell is something different.

1.) Your note that the police use the Chainsaw to breach doors is false.

2.) The Mossberg Chainsaw is a novelty item, a range toy. No one in real life would suggest that thing for home self-defense, especially in the manner that you have to hold it.

I get it, you are a mall ninja. You probably work as a security guard thinking he's hot shit, and have an entire wardrobe of 5.11 Gear and Bates.

And of course you didn't call their customer service and work out a return, since birdshot and slugs are completely different prices. No, the retarded "let the hot wax turn them into a slug" is preferable.

Depends. Is the AR15 an SBR and are you going to train with it weekly? If not, it's a bad idea for home protection. Stick to a 12 gauge if others might use it in an emergency situation. Rotate the rounds, go with a fletchette first round. This way even a young woman could defend herself.

Eesh, you are a goddamn moron. You don't know the basics about ballistics and you have not reloaded a single cartridge. You don't have the capacity to understand the subtle differences between a 5.56 and a 5.7 round. you have not compared the the ballstics gel cavitites or took the the time to understand the quantity of individual ammo choices or fired them. You have not even ordered ammo and understood the RMA policies of Internet retailers. You are a Goddammed troll that can't afford new underwear let alone quality firearms.

Listen punk, you're not on the cybercop portal. You don't know law enforcement procedure or administrative or statutory law. You are a troll.

I could have worded that better, maybe. What I meant was, a pistol round has more penetration than a shotgun round. Missing is not preferential, but if you do, a pistol round has a better chance of causing collateral damage. A rifle round even moreso.

> If you're justified in using deadly force, you're

Close... You have to stop shooting when the law says they're reasonably not a threat.

> No, you don't. They have to be a threat to life
> or permanent injury by the reasonable person
> standard.

Technically right, but... If it's someone you have a restraining order against, you could have better legal footing for shooting someone that turned out to be unarmed. If someone breaks into your house, sure, a reasonable person could say that they certainly weren't there to cook you dinner, but you'll have a harder time legally justifying using lethal force if they didn't have a weapon.

Criminals freak out easy when things don't go as planned. If they break in, you shout a warning, cock the weapon, and they press the attack, then it's very likely that they intend to do you serious harm or kill you. Petty crooks are going to run like hell if confronted with a gun-wielding man, because a chest full of buckshot is not worth whatever they were going to steal from your house.

> Correct. And it's immoral to boot. You can't
> just kill someone for coming into your house. But
> if they're armed or approach you and you're not
> reasonably able to defend yourself (e.g. elderly
> or female or small), then your life is reasonably

I think it's all a gray area, depending on numerous factors that are unique to each situation. Is the intruder/assailant known or unknown to the defender? Does the defender have a physical limitation that would prevent them from defending themselves, unarmed, against an unarmed intruder/assailant that's attacking them? Can the defender and/or family flee and call the police without engaging the intruder in the first place?

Even minimal military or LEO experience can help someone make a better decision in the heat of the moment, but it's going to come down to instinct and reaction. Even more for an untrained civilian.

Blah blah blah... my point is, there's more to home defense than just "shoot whoever is not you or your family if they're in your house." There's a lot of considerations people need to make.

Exactly. Without a Castle Doctrine or "Stand Your Ground" policy, it's about surviving the experience, not protecting your property.

You don't have firearms showing up at your door unless you have a C&R license collecting old and obsolete weapons. I suppose you are implying you are an FFL, but your ignorance about firearms reveals you learn everything from playing Call of Duty.

In the end, you are the one that suggested melting a crayon into a shotshell to somehow convert it into a slug, failing to mention of course that it lacks needed rifling like a Foster slug.

Go play mall ninja somewhere else.

Eesh, you are a troll.

I don't care who you think I am. My posts are not for you. I am an old man and You are an adolescent. I enjoy my firearms. You dream of a gun collection and one day you'll grow up and perhaps you'll have a collection of your own and learn to reload. You'll also discover a number of similarities in the 5.7 and the 5.56 if you ever take the time to shoot them and reload them. As for the crayon loads, they are interesting to shoot and a great way to use up birdshot and all the old crayons.

I don't go to the mall, don't watch cartoons and have everything delivered to me.

I'm trying to impress random strangers on an internet forum (not this one.)

Which gun would I need to claim to own and possess vast amounts of knowledge about in order to get the most internet points for popularity and coolness?

I was thinking I could find photos of the best gun on google images, and post videos of other people shooting their guns or cleaning them.

You guys seem really knowledgeable. Any help?

If you don't have a gun I'd say start with a cheaper gun because as you fiddle with your gun you are going to get a better and better idea of what kind of gun you like. I know people who swear by their pump action shotgun and others who think a revolver is the way to go. I know one guy who thinks that his AR15 is just perfect for shelter in place. By the end of your quest you will probably have all of these so it probably won't matter (buying guns can turn into a bit of a compulsion).

The shotgun is a much more versatile firearm. You can hunt fowl, deer (slugs) and it's clearly the better home defense weapon. Ammo is pretty cheep and readily available. For the price of an AR, you can buy a Mossberg 500 and still have about $500 for ammo. The AR is much more impressive looking, but that doesn't seem to warrant the $800 (minimum!) price.

Yes and the prices are "competitive". Don't expect a 10% savings vis-a-vis local gun stores at this gun show. We live in a rich area and the dealers there know they can charge more and they do.

If you just want a vanilla Mossberg, then just go to Dick's when they have a sale. That's what I did just around Christmas 3 years or so ago. I bought a 28" barrel vent rib 500 12 gauge with wood furniture for $230 and then I bought a $90 18" barrel for defensive use.

With this, I can defend my home well, but I wouldn't trust it unless you spend a LOT of time shooting it. A short-stroke with a pump action is easy to happen and that can cost you your life in a defensive situation.

IMO, the best dedicated defensive shotgun is the Mossberg 590A1. These are built to Mil-Spec and they're the only shotguns the Marines use. Make sure to get one with a metal trigger guard and Ghost-Ring sights. They run about $450 or so, but they're more than worth it.

All that being said, an AR-15 is easier for most people to shoot well, and keep running through a fight.

Either way, there is no substitute for good training. Your cool gun is worthless without a trained shooter.

Take a moment to watches the following you tube video of the use of wax slugs at the range http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1LwpjRaovOU

They do not foul the barrel and the shoot plenty strait through smooth bore shot guns. They will drop an intruder at 50 feet. With a pistol grip hip shooting Mossberg Cruiser 500 with a chainsaw grip. I use gunzilla spray and that makes my barrel appear very clean. Birdshot is cheap and the hand out crayons to the grand kids when you eat out.

This is fun inexpensive way to enjoy a short barrel Mossberg.

Not having a basement and living in a area where home invasions occur, I ponder the outcome of two scenarios.

One, I flee to my bedroom and call 911, attempt to whisper my fear as the home invader enters the bedroom ( because that is where they look for valuables, or bathroom for drugs) we make eye contact and I say please don't hurt me.

Two I flee to my bedroom and point my 38 at the bedroom door and say stop the police are on their way.

It's either him or your family's that you will be wiping off your walls? You choose. BTW, 00 beats a handgun anyday-anytime-anyplace. You don't have to really aim. To bring a bat to a gun fight, is well... very kind of you. We can write that on you tombstone.

I don't have family anymore and been shot more than once. Prefer cremation

Shotgun without a doubt. Buckshot rounds will do the job. AR15 too expensive and if you are not familiar with the operation you will end up shooting yourself in the foot. Shotgun is simple and easy to clean. Ammo plentiful.

I would never waste beer. God and I had a disagreement during the last century so I no longer visit his house. Guns are for killing. And I know a little about that.
"If one moron has a gun then you have to arm all morons. Or it isn't good sport"
I'm tired of morons. They stain the walls and stink up the place.

Crayola slugs for home defense. LMAO. Sound to me someone is too cheap to go out and buy some 00 or slugs.

A real man will place an apple on his childs head. Practice, Practice, Practice.
You also need to drink. You never know when a home breakin will occur and what condition you will be. The reason for involving your child is the burglar might be holding your child hostage. Practice makes perfect. Hopefully you have more than one child.

until you own both. It's not how big it is, but how many. That's how you get home invasions. They don't break in for one.

I prefer a Glock 21 in .45ACP.Shotguns are for hunting.Their length doesn't work well inside a house.AR s are waay too loud inside a house.Pistol grip crauiser shotguns are hard on my hands and wrists.I don't like them.

The best advertisement for Glock has been the last three mass murderers.
They preferred Glock three outta three.
When you gotta flock,
Grab the Glock.
Perfection.

45 ACP is a great choice for home defense, but some people might not be comfortable with the recoil.

An alternative would be getting a Beretta CX4 Storm chambered in 45 ACP. Can't go wrong with a pistol carbine, all the recoil is negligible.

Or
To drop the flock,
grab the Glock.

Don't like the masses,
Shoot their asses.

To stop the revolt,
Grab your Colt.

No more fun,
They took my gun.

Anyone who relies on a rimfire cartridge for self defense purposes is an idiot pushing their luck.

I hope when you say Ruger you mean revolver and not semi-auto.

Good luck.

Ruger MK3. Thanks but i will not need it, best of luck to you. You will be needing it after you are shocked by the muzzle flash and noise of your assault rifle.

Assuming you aren't just being facetious, an AK47 clone is not a good choice as 7.62 rounds have great penetration abilities. It would go through your walls and through another house before it knew it hit anything.

Have one. Great guns. Just not great self defense guns.

Have a couple of ARs too. Also great guns. But not real great home defense weapons either for reasons of their own.

Rimfires just aren't reliable enough especially in semi-auto. Too many FTFs/FTEs, etc. But you obviously know it all so rock on Rambo.

There is a massive gun rush underway. I am having trouble locating different types of ammo. Either it is in stock and the prices 50% up, or just not in stock. When I browse Cheaperthandirt.com it seems like the guns that are desirable are mostly sold out.

On gunsamerica.com there are some hilarious auctions for ammo. Saw one last week that had bid up to 3000.00 for 4000 rounds of 5.7 and still not hit the reserve. For that kind of money I would expect to get a much bigger bullet like .308

Why not go to a range and tryout a few weapons before making a decision. If you find a weapon that you enjoy shooting there is the better chance that you will get familiar with it and your instinctual muscle memory will assist you should there be a home invasion and your life threatened. I am also hearing that most home invasions in the metro area are happening between 9am and 3pm. Perhaps muzzle blast blindness is not a big issue, but do burglars carry guns around here?

Is the one available when needed. Install good locks and relax. This is a very paranoid society. The you advertise you may have valuables in the house. Protection? Have you offended someone enough that they are coming in to kill you or your family? If you have access, so will your children.
Would you like to come home and find your childs brains spattered over your new sofa? Burglar's usually come in when no one is home and a gun is just one more thing for them to take.

Ruger MK1/2/3 series are pretty reliable.Especially with the better grades of ammo.Like CCI mini mags. They hardly ever jam.

Over sixty million homes in the US and yes it happens.
I guess we should have sixty million guns for the children to get their little hands on.
Auto accidents happen too.

Twelve year old girl shoots home intruder. You don't see stories like these plastered all over the mainstream media.

The parents who allow their children to have guns in the house are irresponsible.
Children should play outside with guns.

Mossberg definitely. It's been my home defense gun for years.
18" barrel. Trick it out. And great ammo choices.
I used to load shell so first shell out was a blank. Second and third with rubber shot. The rest with buckshot.
If you have to get to the buckshot, you deserve buckshot.

This is a troll post....but a Tec-9 fires 9mm, hence the name Tec-NINE.

And 44 Magnum is for revolvers.

See....I knew someone such as you would Google "44 Magnum pistol" after I made my post.

The Desert Eagle is unique among pistols as it is gas operated, not recoil or blowback operated like most pistols. The Desert Eagle is also EXTREMELY unreliable, as it is EXTREMELY sensitive to dirt and brands of ammunition.

Being that this $1500 range toy is the only pistol that fires 44 Magnum, I stand by my statement that 44 Magnum is for revolvers.
