Was watching this on ESPN, waiting for nascar when it happened. What a terrible accident. I felt like throwing up afterwards

RIP and my prayers are with his family and friends.

Is anyone really that surprised? Why not put Russian roulette on TV?

yeah, im going to have to agree. the cars that are purely built for speed and are more like controlled bombs. it's no surprise to me that the engine exploded thus twisting parachutes. they should add ejection seats on those things.

Yesterday some of the racers were saying the tracks were built in the 1950s and 60s when cars barely exceeded 200 mph (today they run 300mph to 330mph). They said if the track had been long enough or the heat length was shorter, this could have been avoided. I imagine you will see some changes as a result.

From Wiki: "Kalitta was transported to the Old Bridge Division of Raritan Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead."

Not to be indelicate, but I'm really surprised after seeing that crash that there was anything to transport. That's a really sad piece of video.

Kind of like how the announcer said "he died of his injuries." When you are torn to shreds and burned to a crisp, are you still considered "injured?"

Apparently NHRA is pulling down all copies of the Scott Kalitta crash. I found this duplicate copy...

I noticed for the first time that a cherry picker with a video camera was sitting at the end of the track on the other side of the safety netting. It looks like Kalitta's car runs into it when it explodes. I noticed on race day there was nothing on the other side of the safety netting. Could NHRA be making an effort to cover itself regarding a lawsuit??
