Extreme calling in sick

Probably could have used better phrasing there. I'm sure there are some managers or upper managers that post on here. I need to know if I am crazy. What would you do if you had an employee that worked for you. Every week, literally, called in sick 1-2 times a week. If he does not call in sick the 2nd day, he leaves early for a doctors appt at some time (every week). The problem gets ignored like a fat chick on a nude beach. You see all of the other employees pulling their weight. Coming to work regularly. Working hard, but Mr. Douche Bigalow just keeps up the same shit. WTF?! What would you do?

Sounds like a Gov't employee to me. Anyone else would be fired.

Nope. We deal with Government agencies. He's not. Lazy fuck.

Do you know if he is actually sick? He may have a health issue that the mangement is aware of. If he is not, he should be fired.

Sounds like a lazy private sector worker taking advantage of lax sick time allotment.

Not in my department. When I was promoted to Manager my boss gave
me a mandate to clean up a mess that had been going on in one of
the sections for years, much what the OP describes. There were
howls and screams when I put my foot down about leave abuse but they
got over it. I have no tolerance for leave abuse and follow the rules
of progressive discipline. So far I've only had to fire two employees
and two others have quit rather than correct their problems but hey,
every time we have an opening I see over 50 applications. Can't come
to work on time, call in sick every time I turn around, forge a
doctors certificate? Bye bye....

You see this as a distration. I see this as an opportunity. If you can figure out what he does and what he's responsible for then you can start knocking out his work too. Make sure you keep records of what you did and then leverage that come review time.

It depends, I had an admin assistant who was like that. Dude just had terrible health. Even though it was a simple admin job it was disruptive to the workplace and after about 18months we had to let him go.

My father owned a restaurant when I was growing up. He always used to say to me, "95% of the job is just showing up."

Not a snitch, but I work hard. Black folks get a bad rap for being lazy often. This dude is white. So I went to HR a while back. Instead of addressing his issue directly, they implemented a no nonsense tardy policy (which they never enforced). NEVER addressed his abuse of calling in sick. Even the VP of HR said that it was abuse, yet dude isnt disciplined. Reason for whining? When he is out, we pick up his slack. Sometimes have to sacrifice lunches. When he comes back in, he takes 15-20 smoke breaks literally. This situation has gone on from what 've heard, over 5 years. As long as he has been here. It stinks of manipulation. Sounds like dude has major damage on someone high up. No other explanation.

Is he married? Perhaps he is cheating on his wife. Next time he comes in late, smell his fingers.

His wife is a douche too. I can't a imagine a decent chick that would be cool with their husband calling in sick every week like a puss. Unless Hay Zeus is on to something and he is creeping?

You should just start calling in sick as much as he does. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for you.

This is a tough call without knowing the nature of his 'illness'. He really could be sick, but he might not want to disclose the nature of his illness to the troops. I worked with a woman once who had lupus. She called in sick all the time. But she actually was sick. Even though it means more work for other people, it's hard to be hard on someone like that.

On the other hand, when I worked for the Government a long time ago, there was a woman who called in sick EVERY DAY for months - 'female problems'. Somehow it didn't stop her from shopping at Garfinkels, where we'd see her at lunch. Management wouldn't touch it. As a Government contractor, I saw a similar case while onsite. That woman was finally fired. Only time I've seen a Fed fired.

One thing I can tell you for sure - if you let this eat you up, it will. It took me a long time to learn to let things go. You'll be much happier.

You are the only one that keeps harping every day on the fact you are black. No one else cares.

Ahmayzin seems like a cool guy and is a respected poster, but quite frankly, Johnny Winter is blacker.

Eesh, relax. I just do it to lighten things up. At the end of the day, we are all imperfect.

Dude has made it very clear that he has no condition, as when he returns, he never shows signs of sickness. It also is not documented in all his years, per HR, of any known illness. It has come to light that he is friends with my manager's boss. So that's part of it. I'm mostly just venting at the end of the day. I'm dealing with it much better than before.

Oh and since it was mentioned, for the record I'm not his boss, I'm his peer. I don't want to do what he does, because I'm above that. We are here to serve a purpose and get paid for it. Others are suffering and cannot affectly do their job because of him. Just seems rather odd noone cares. So I wanted to get the FFXU heartless take on it. Laziness is disgusting. I do not condone it in my house, definitely don't codone it at work.

You are 100% correct. I've actually said multiple times, if I knew he was sick, I would have a totally different attitude. To say you are sick, then go out and smoke 20 cigarettes and crack jokes like you are fine....just doesnt seem legit. Thanks for all the responses....we can move on now.
