Does Anyone Still Root for the Orioles?
Posted by: WingNut ()
Date: September 27, 2012 09:44PM

They used to be my team.

Not a huge baseball guy, but I go to 4 or 5 games a year and watch in October.

I saw a few Senators games when I was a wee lad, then switched allegiance to Bmore back in the old Memorial Stadium ( what a shit hole, but who knew any better)Watched the O's in the late seventies and in 83 when they won the series with Eddie Murray and Jim Palmer.

Watched them pretty hard again 10-12 years ago and I can still almost name the batting order, pitchers etc...

Over the last 4 or 5 years, I've committed to the Nats, partially because the games are closer and partially because I believe Peter Angelos to be a piece of dog shit...

I cannot name a SINGLE FUCKING PLAYER on the Orioles today, and they are doing good. What happened to Orioles fans from Northern VA? Are there any left?

I have a little nostalgia for the old days, but they are literally a team of strangers to me.

Back in the day I did. I never had the time or patience to sit down and watch the games much but I enjoyed listening to John Miller on the radio. He was great.

I heard his partner Tom Marr on Baltimore AM a few years ago, he does a right wing political show. Best Bmore accent since Marty Bass.

the only reason to root for the O's is because they play in a division with the Yankees and Red sox. Eternal underdogs to those AL juggernaughts.

I was an Orioles fan from the early 70's. Maybe it's because the O's were playing so poorly prior to baseball's return to Washington but, it just didn't seem appropriate to root for a team in Baltimore when I live closer to Nationals Park.

Speaking of things not seeming appropriate...After rooting for the team for nearly 30 years, shelling out thousands of dollars over that time in the form of tickets, souvenirs, food and beverage I was eternally offended when Peter Angelos was asked about baseball in Washington being a threat to his business interests in Baltimore and his smugly blubbering response was, "Well, there's no REAL baseball fans in Washington..."

Well, who the fuck has been lining your pockets since 1993, Peter? Those butts in your seats weren't all Baltimorons...I hope we slit their throats and shit down their necks in the World Series one day. Shitters...drink that Natty-Bo and shove it up your shove-hole!

Here's a great article from 2006 which references his disdain for DC's baseball enthusiasm under the "Angelos and His Poor Relationship with His Fellow Owners".

I was born and raised in Northern VA.

Grew up watching the Orioles.

They were my team. If you were a baseball fan, they were the local team.

The Nationals came around a few years ago. Am I a Nationals Fan, now?

NO, I'm still an Orioles fan...

Except now I am a Nats fan too. How can you not be? But the Orioles will always be my first love.

The day Cal Ripken retired was the last time I watched the O's play unless they were playing the Nationals.

Not only did Angelos call out all the baseball fans in the district, but he fucked over the Nationals completely by throwing a fit and forcing MLB to award him control of the Nationals TV contract.

The ass arranged it so the Nats would only get 10% of the TV money in the beginning moving upward to 33% at the end of the 23 year deal.

He's so greedy that when he opened the doors to MASN, he signed the same deal with his own ball club.

So the next time you O's fans complain they aren't spending enough on players, the only reason is your cheap assed owner.

I'm still an Os fan. Doubt I'll ever convert. Too much good history in that organization to abandon. I just can't get behind the Nats. The park is such a pain to get to, the area is a dump and parking sucks.

that used to "follow" the borioles here. growing up, in the early 70s, i spent every summer at the shore in south jersey. a perk of having a mother that was a teacher whose parents owned a house there. with WOR out of NY broadcasting anything and everything yankee, that with a steady diet of reggie, ron, tommy john, the goose, etc....i became a yankee fan.

it was difficult for the generation too young to remember the senators to not be boriole fans around here ( if they were baseball fans ), since that was the adopted team here, and every sports broadcast ( TV and paper ) jammed them down our throats. old school fans probably still are for the most part, the "converts", if you will, probably jumped ship once the gnats came around. then, like the bandwagon capital fans who come out of the woodwork when they play well, more jumped on the DC team this year.

as a yankee fan for so long i used to loathe the boss, thinking he was damian's spawn. then angelos came on the scene, and i LOL'd mightily at all the poor boriole peeps who had to endure that flaming pin head.

The Orioles have been a mediocre franchise living off of their ancient glory days for a long time now, much like the Redskins. I lost interest in them long before the Nationals came to town. And I have always detested that smiling bird logo they resurrected from the 70s this year.

I have been and always will be an Orioles fan. They became my team when I was a young boy and have been a fan since the Brooks and Frank Robinson days. That is when the Orioles were real winners. I am real happy to see they are in the playoffs again after all these years. It is all because of Buck. GO ORIOLES.

i was a huge O's fan growing up. jim palmer, eddie murray, rick dempsey and cal ripken were my first baseball heroes. i remember watching them go up 3-1 against the pirates in '79, only to see them drop 3 straight. it was crushing.

i continued to be a fan, however, as there was no baseball in dc.

through the 80s and 90s when billy joined his brother and brady anderson decided to wear his sideburns waaaay too long, i continued to follow them. they were the closest and they were my team.

i had season tickets in 94 and again in 95. they were close. 96 brought heartache with that damn snot-nosed kid jeffery maier interfering with what should've been a homer.

yes, i was an O's fan...it was who i was.

until that day in august of 97 (98?), when the trade deadline was looming. we left our office in crystal city and made the drive north on the BW parkway. by the time we got there, there were only two names on the roster we recognized: cal and bj surhoff. the rest? gone.

that was the day i hung up my O's cap and swore never to root for them again as long as the spawn of the devil himself peter angelos had anything to do with the team. i root for the Nationals now and, having grown up an american league fan, have learned to see the value of having all 9 players hit, like they do in the national league.

so, to answer your question, no, i do not (root for the orioles).

Gotta admit, when I was an O's fan, I developed a hatred for the Yankees and Red Sox that never went away.

As a Nats fan, I don't care as much about the Braves or the Phillies.

I feel the exact same way. But you can add the Blue Jays to my hate list too. Memories of Cito Gaston, John Olerud, Joe Carter, Paul Molitor, Ricky Henderson, Pat Hengton, Roberto Alomar (although I loved him as an Oriole) are still in my head.

Damn, I hated those guys!

SO the Orioles have clinched a wild card spot and with 3 games to go the Yankees have to lose 1 more than the Orioles in order for the season to end in a tie for the AL East. The Yanks are playing Boston (and they suck but may rise to the occasion to play spoiler to their arch enemies) and the Orioles are at Tampa Bay.

In the case of a tie, there would be a 1 game playoff between the two (not sure where) to see who gets the division title, if I understand all this correctly. Of course that sucks because they have burn a start with their best available pitcher---although, depending on how many days are between games it may not be that significant a disadvantage.

It's great to have baseball back in this area!

So much more passion in the AL east. This past weekend a year ago the Os edged out Boston in Baltimore as Tampa beat NY down in FL. Those two wins on the final day of the season separated by only two minutes knocked Boston out and put Tampa in. MLB couldn't have asked for a better finish.

How can you root for the nats after being an O's fan for years. The O's are a good team and quit frankley better than the nats at this stage of the game. By the way how can you be a nats fan living in nova? I understand if you live in dc you root for the nats. You live in nova its free game who you root for.last I checked they are not called the nova nationals. Think about it when you go to a sports bar in nova you see all kinds of fans. Hell I even saw a group of browns fans who the hell is a browns fan lol. Think of ripken murray anderson and the other 90's great player would feel about your ship jumping. :) happy 4th of July!!!!!!!
