Food prices
Posted by: Joe Friday ()

Today I was at the Oakton Giant. I noticed Watermelon..a quarter portion of a somewhat small watermelon to begin with. Price...$9.29. I asked one of the workers/associates if this was a mistake. No mistake. Anyone else noticing crazy prices on food items recently? This would come out to about $37.00 for a watermelon.

Its the beginning of the collapse of the global food market due to endless drought and the rising price of fuel.

Sgt Joe - there was a brutal drought that impacted farming and commodity prices this summer. Watermelon's are mostly water and because of the drought - there wasn't exactly a bumper crop of watermelons. So prices have gone up.

BTW: The fuck head Republicans killed the Farm Bill and their decade old temporary Bush Tax Cuts have driven the economy into the shitter so we are fucked for a while.

Get out your garden hoe in the Spring and plant a garden.

I got $10,000 that the skinny negro basketball player beats the homely white nerd in the race this fall.

Wanna bet?

Yeah, no kidding! Food Lion is charging $23 for a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs were going for $44.40.

Its interesting that you can get Peapod (by Giant) to deliver a whole watermelon to you for $7.99. I guess you're paying that exorbitant "in store convenience fee".

Thanks Ito. I don't start many threads, and always enjoy your posts. Guess I started this because I was really shocked. I have never tried Peapod, or delivery. Was just simply floored by the price.

Seriously - grow your own garden.
It tastes so much better and it feels so good to grow your own food.

Thanks. My neighbor does that..Watermelon, all kinds of peppers, etc. Then they can them. Yep..next year my own garden. Or at least I will try!

@Joe Friday

I had a similar shock a few weeks ago when I went to buy shrimp. I was shocked to see $12/pound for medium size "regular" shrimp.

It was because of that that I had to look up the Peapod prices.

There was a story this week that pork prices are going to go through the roof next year because of the drought. Who knows?

@Ito..Seems like everything is going through the roof. Neighboor I mentioned in above post also grew corn. She said prices are going to go sky high soon. Wegmans had canned for 44 cents. Bought 50 cans before they cost $1.00.plus. Great for throwing into come sort of "stew"!

May embarrass myself, lol...but going on a price hunting search tomorrow. Since when can a middle class family think they need to fit corn or watermelon into thier budget? Really getting crazy out there!

Maybe this is the "something" the Mayans were talking about.

You know where to buy dirt cheap food? Latino markets.

I was in one looking for some Santa Muerta candles and I couldn't get over how cheap everything was.

I prefer the Korean supermarkets, but yeah. Fresh fruit, vegetables, fresh fish. I can't stand eating all the packaged and boxed food in the U.S. supermarkets.

No kidding. I was driving down Germantown Road and stopped at the Chain Bridge Road intersection. A black limousine pulls up and stops at the same light. The obviously wealthy man in the back rolls down his window and asks, "Pardon me, do you have any watermelon?"

Food like lentils, rice, dried beans & peas, pasta, onions, carrots, potatoes, canned tomatoes, are always pretty cheap. Splurge another few bucks for some chicken breasts or sausages and you'll get some good meals out of that.

@TheMeeper....sounds like your cooking at my house. We try and throw things together as you mentioned, and it comes out as a great meal for a great price. Still trying to figure out why it costs me less to buy the best steaks for a family of 4 vs a Watermellon! I know, Google is my friend. Seems the drought in some places is causing/or will be, a shock to all of us.

Why is a gallon of skim milk $3.99 at Giant, $3.59 on Peapod, and $2.73 at WalMart? Is the milk at WalMart loaded up with rBGH or something?

I usually buy my groceries on my way home from work at the WalMart in Fairfax because they have a full grocery store in addition to their regular crap-o-rama, but if I forget the milk or don't want to drive all the way back, the Giant is the closest supermarket to my house and it seems like it's significantly more expensive.

Americans had to have everything. New cars, houses, flat screens, iPad 5 and you start complaining about food prices and gas.
What were you thinking. Water and food is what keeps us alive. Unless you grow it you have to buy it.Once price increases start the uphill climb, wonder whats on the other side.
That flat screen set will start looking like a lean cuisine,
It will not matter who the President is because Grandpops will have to sell the farm to Monsanto and Dylan won't work on Maggie's farm.
Buy the watermelon and freeze it for a rainy day.

Bitch tried to charge my $150 to eat her pussy. I was like " bitch, shut the fuck up and get the fuck outta here." She couldn't live without my dick, so she gave me the pussy for a package of snackwell cookies.
