New Families Moving to Stafford: What You Need to Know About Our Underfunded Schools

Stafford County is experiencing rapid residential growth, attracting new families with affordable housing and a strong job market. But behind the appealing home prices, our schools are in crisis.

Stafford County’s school system has been grossly underfunded since 2012, with major funding gaps that have only widened as the population has grown. While more families move in, our schools simply don’t have the resources to keep up.

The Reality of Stafford Schools Today:
-Stafford ranks 117th out of 132 school divisions in Virginia for per-pupil spending – despite being one of the wealthiest counties in the state.
-Residential growth is skyrocketing, but the county’s over-reliance on housing developments—without proper business investment—means schools aren't getting the funding they need.
-Underpaid teachers are leaving for better-paying districts, making it harder to retain experienced educators.
-Larger class sizes, outdated buildings, and declining student achievement are the direct results of chronic underfunding.
-School funding gaps have persisted for over a decade, forcing schools to cut programs, delay repairs, and struggle to meet students' needs.

Meanwhile, families are moving here expecting strong public schools, only to find a district that doesn’t have the resources to support its growing student population.

What Can Be Done?
-Demand that the Board of Supervisors increase local investment in schools—Stafford only funds 36.7% of its school budget locally, compared to Prince William (52%) and Loudoun (71%).
-Vote in the upcoming elections—4 School Board seats and 4 Board of Supervisors seats are on the ballot this year.
-Speak at the next School Board Meeting and make your voice heard!

What has your experience been with Stafford schools? Are you seeing overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, or resource gaps? Share your thoughts below!!
