Possible sinkhole on property

Due to all the rain I have a large depression in my yard. It might be a sinkhole or the land use to be used for farming, possible an old well. Any idea on who to contact to remediate this issue?

Post a pic.

How deep is the hole?

How long have you lived there? Anything like this before? How close to the house?

Not posting a pic on here.

It's about 1/2 acre from my house. Probably 8-10 feet in diameter and it''s sunken about 2-3 feet at the lowest point. I've lived here for 5 years and never saw this. The land did not seem filled in when we purchased it and old ariel photos are not showing a depression in that area.

Because of the circular shape I am leaning toward an old well, but not really sure.

Based on what you've described, possibly an old well.

I'd fill it in (mark it) and keep an eye on it over the coming years.

A typical sinkhole in this area will be much deeper and you can usually tell by the soil on the sides if it is a depression or sinkhole. Depressions are gradually formed whereas sinkholes are spontaneous. Sinkhole remediation is typically reserved for cases where a structure or roadway is threatened and there are firms that specialize in this.

Thank you! That is very helpful. And yes, it has been very gradually sinking. It started last spring when the heavy rains started. So most likely an old well.
