I'm a 17 yr old and i got pulled over, the cop said i was doing 110 in a 55 when i was doing 79/80 i was still speeding but not as much as they said. The reason he thought i was doing that speed was because there was another blackish silver primed car, and it flew passed me, then cut over in front of me, as i went over the hill, then the cop came over the hill and thought it was me. So if anyone can help out let me know. I am already signed up for a Driver improvement course.

Wow, that has to be the most-used excuse in court.

If the cops say they have you on radar, get a lawyer. Most times, jail time is not optional for a conviction for speed over 100MPH, and state law says 90MPH is the jail/no jail line (likely you will not do time for less than 100).

And if they say they have you on radar, little else you say matters. A lawyer will say the same thing.

He never said that he had it on radar nor did he show me the radar when i got pulled!

My friend said he got pulled doing 125/55 and he got off because the cop didn't show him the radar, so the cop dropped the charge!

If "all else fails" you probably would already have been found guilty before you have the chance to bring up this "speed calibration" excuse up. Talk to a lawyer before you end representing yourself and making things worse.

ok , i just recently got a reckless driving charge, i was going about 83 on a 55mph road, cop clock me at 79, and of couse i ran from the cop (i almost got away he didnt find me until 2 miles later)anyway, there is a new law in va, the pigs does not have to show u the radar anymore, and yes u should get a layer, dont need a expensive one, cause u going to loose anyway, the speedcalibration thing , just get it done, ill help ,, well just so u know ,,U R GOING TO JAIL ANYWAY, JUST DONT DROP THE SOAP!!!!!! RESton, in defense of these fucktards, (thanks for that term Gravis, I use it everyday...) I think with the new LIDAR, the cops either had to show it or if asked, they had to show it. The law recently change stating that it does not have to be shown now.

I was pulled over in Prince William county for doing "92/65". I was most definitely speeding when i got pulled over, but i was hanging out in a pack of cars doing 75-80. How did I get clocked at 92? Maybe it was that maxima that flew past everyone. I still got nailed for it.

btw: jail for a speeding ticket isn't that bad. they'll throw you in a room with a few people that have DUI's and so on.

I had the exact same charges. i was 17, and doing 110 in a 55, i got a night in jail with 89 days suspended, 110 hrs of comm service, had to take driver improvement, payed 1500$ for a laywer and got 375$ of court fees...your fucked my friend

As a native of Fairfax, and a recent PW County transplant with a checkered driving record, here are my pieces of advice.

Get your speedometer calibration checked, but do not rely on this as your sole source by any means. At best you'll be off by a few MPH (sliding scale, it would be more as overall speed increases, but not enough to throw your case out.) Do not even think about bringing this up unless your speedo is off by about 10 mph at 80, it'll make you look foolish, and worse, guilty. But get it done anyway, can't hurt to have in your back pocket (as long as the results are in your interest)

So, you'll go to court.

Next steps, the unlikely will not happen. Your issuing officer will show up, therefore you will see the judge. Remember this, though it might feel like the worst day of your life, its standard, by-the-book stuff for the judge. He/She will see 50 other sob stories like yours that morning alone. This is where you get to make your case (lawyer or not.)

its simple, really. You've googled it, you're here. You know what CAN happen. Its now up to you to lessen the blow. And by using basic, common practice.

- Please, thank you, "your honor" - be polite, show respect for the judge
- continuation of above, don't be a dick - goes a long way.
- don't make stupid excuses - by this time, there's not much left to say other than, "i did it" - don't waste their time, and they'll appreciate it (or even get a chuckle - happened to me, honest) They will appreciate the candor and frankness.

Best advice and posting on this topic. I had a similar experience in 1991 in PW County. Charges and fines were reduced just because I appeared in a suit and tie, respectable haircut, contrite demeanor, and admitted I did it because I was tired and in a hurry to get home. My insurance rates were slammed for three years.
