Kudos on the idiots comment from the former Atlantic Research employee.
So many idiots, so little facts.
I was an employee of Atlantic Research from 1976 to 1989. Although I didn't work in the Propulsion division at Gainesville I worked as a technician for the Teleproducts Division in Springfield, Va. on Cherokee Ave. off of I-95. (The potato chip building, as many called it because of the roof line).
Like you said, Atlantic Research was a good company to work for. Probably one of the best ones I have ever worked for. They cared for their employees, had a pension sharing program that was second to none.... matched you dollar for dollar, and paid interest on that, when inflation was getting rampant and interest was 18%. We had yearly company pick-nicks. Stock sharing in later years.
We were somewhat involved in the analyzing and testing of exhaust gases from the gas generators made by the Propulsion Division, although our main product was data communication test instruments and patch panels.
You are right about clean burning fuel. In relation to some comments about "deaths", there are obviously always going to be hazards when dealing with powerful propellants. Most of the so-called accidents were because of operator errors, not Arc's negligence.
At 70 now, I have found that most people are not technical in nature, impatient, quick to accuse, have a vivid imagination that is easily swayed, come to their own wrong conclusions, only wanting instant gratification. Especially true in today's society.
Of course we, as a society have learned better and safer procedures over the last 75 years. That's progress, and anyone familiar with OSHA regulations today knows that.
The site was a rural site in the 60's and 70's when there was nothing around it, and that is why it was placed in this location. The rural growth around it has later invaded the area, and should never have been sold for residential use. It was by greed of local businesses and builders that it was sold, and that is the issue. It always is.
