The Town of Lovettsville's new Parks Committee is making good on its pledge to get projects moving and to establish a unified priority policy for its various park areas. First up will be the completion of the long-planned Lovettsville Veterans Memorial.

Until now, the Town Square, a large open space that sits between the divided lanes of Rt. 287 just west of the town's traditional commercial street, East Broad Way, has had some landscaping installed, along with the town Christmas tree and a flagpole erected four years ago at the southern end by the Lovettsville-Waterford Ruritan Club. The flagpole has been the focus of the town's commemorative events, including Veterans Day observances.

Previously, residents have stood on the sidewalk looking toward the flagpole as ceremonies led by Mayor Elaine Walker were held on the grass in front of the flagpole. But this Nov. 11, the town will be able to commemorate Veterans Day at the finished Veterans Memorial that will anchor the southern end of the square, a landscaped semi-circular stone wall with seating surrounding the 32-foot-across round stone pavers laid around the flagpole. Extensive landscaping encloses the wall and fills out the space on both sides. The memorial obelisk that currently is located outside the Lovettsville Town Hall will be moved to the Veterans Memorial.

The bid for the garden design and installation was awarded to R.L. Landscapes of Kearneysville, WV. Town Manager Keith Markel said the committee chose that firm because of its bid price-$40,000-quality of design, crew size and ability to get the job done in the time allotted. The two-foot-high stone wall provides seating for spectators and has five three-foot-high pillars set into it, which will bear bronze castings of memorial seals representing the five service arms: Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy. The cost of the memorial seals work, $2,100, will be borne by the Ruritan Club. Two benches are planned at the circle.

Sidewalks will lead into the memorial from both sides of the square edged with six-inch by nine-inch engraved memorial pavers, which also will edge the circular stone terracing. The memorial pavers will be available to individuals wishing to honor family veterans, past and present. The veteran's name will be engraved on the paver, along with a small amount of text-still to be decided. They will be installed in batches of 50, Markel said. The exact price will not be determined by the committee until the text question is settled, but it is expected to be in the $200 to $300 range per memorial paver, according to Markel.

A ceremony is planned for Nov. 11 with the formal dedication of the Veterans Memorial. For more information, call the town office at 540-822-5788.
