An 18-year-old Leesburg man was sentenced Aug. 25 to more than 13 years in prison for inappropriate sexual acts to an 8-year-old girl.
Geovani Amaya Nataren was 17 years old at the time of the incident and was prosecuted as an adult because of the severe nature of the crime and the young age of the victim, according to a release from the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
Leesburg Police and detectives responded to the victim’s home on Dec. 29, 2010, to investigate the report made earlier that day. Nataren and his father were housemates of the victim and her family - Nataren was arrested that same day.
On May 13, Nataren pleaded guilty to one count of rape of a child under 13 years of age.
“When prosecuting individuals such as this, expanding the possibility to adult sentencing gives the court greater flexibility in rendering a just punishment,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman. “Here, the facts justified the lengthy prison term, and we’re satisfied that we were able to remove this individual from the community and away from other potential child victims.”
Nataren’s sentencing hearing on Aug. 25 before Judge Burke F. McCahill lasted several hours, according to reports.
McCahill handed down a 40-year sentence with all but 13 years and 8 months suspended. Nataren was ordered to serve in the Department of Juvenile Justice until his 21st birthday. He will then serve the balance of his sentence in the Virginia Department of Corrections.
A native of Honduras, Nataren came to the U.S. when he was 13. Once he completes his prison term he will be removed from the country.
