Loudoun County Public Schools has announced the policy for providing free and reduced price meals for eligible students for the 2011-2012 school year.
Eligible students will be determined by the household size and income.

Students in a household of two, with a maximum income of $19,123 are eligible for free meals and eligible for reduced meals with a household income between $19,123 and $27,214.

For every additional member in the household, the amount of income increases $4,966 for free meal eligibility. It is increased $7,067 for reduced meals.

Children who are members of households currently enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – formerly the food stamp program – or who receive temporary assistance for needy families may be automatically eligible for free meals. Homeless, migrant or runaway children may also be eligible.
Any foster child is automatically eligible regardless of his or her current household.

According to the news release, applications are currently being distributed to all households to notify families of the possibility of free or reduced meals. Applications are also available at each school.

Under the policy, applications will be reviewed by Teresa Lucas, LCPS dietetic technician, who will determine eligibility.

Should eligibility be denied, families have the opportunity to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision either verbally or in writing to Jeff Platenberg, LCPS assistant superintendent of support services.

Households may apply for free or reduced meals at any time throughout the school year.
