UPDATE: Five-year-old escapes serious injury from third-story fall; deputy rescues 4-year-old

A 5-year-old boy was not seriously injured Tuesday night after authorities say he fell off the third- story balcony of a Sterling apartment.

In addition, a Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputy was able to save a 4-year-old girl from falling off the same balcony.

The 5-year-old boy was taken to Inova Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies were called about 8:36 p.m. to the apartment at Corkwood Drive and Ridgehaven Terrace, according to reports.

When Deputy Casey Johnson arrived, he saw the 4-year-old girl hanging on to the outside of the balcony railing.

A crowd of people had gathered around the boy who was lying on the ground, Johnson said.

Johnson yelled to the girl to hold on, then ran up three flights of stairs to get into the apartment.

Johnson said he beat on the door several times to get the occupant inside to open the door. Once he began kicking the door to get it open, a woman who was inside of the apartment opened the door, he said.

The deputy was able to then pull the 4-year-old girl to safety.

Child Protective Services is now investigating the incident.

According to Kraig Troxell, spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, the kids, who are cousins, were playing on the balcony when the 5-year-old climbed over the railing and fell. The 4-year-old had climbed over the railing, attempting to help her cousin, when Johnson arrived and saw her hanging from the balcony.

Authorities don’t yet know how long the kids were playing alone.

Johnson, a three-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, said instinct and adrenalin took over the second he saw the child hanging from the balcony.

“The look on her face at the moment I grabbed her, I’ll never forget it. She grabbed onto my shoulder and you could just see the look of fear she had of falling,” Johnson said.

Following the incident, Johnson said he was able to comfort the child by putting her in his patrol car, where she played with the lights.

But despite his heroic actions, Johnson said the 4-year-old girl was the brave one in the incident.

“Her first reaction was to try and save her cousin,” he said.

Loudoun County Sheriff Steve Simpson on Wednesday praised Johnson for his quick action that possibly saved the 4-year-old girl’s life.

“In a life-saving incident, every second matters,” Simpson said. “I’m extremely proud of how he handled this.”

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to correct the time of the incident and the gender of the 5-year-old.
