Loudoun County has again been recognized as one of the most technologically advanced county governments in the United States. Loudoun is ranked among the top ten in its population category in a national survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties. Loudoun has consistently scored in the top tier of the survey since 2004.
The 2011 Digital Counties Survey found that Loudoun is among the counties “effectively economizing and finding innovative ways of using technology to meet the higher demand for services during this trying economic time.” One of the technologies highlighted in the survey and in use in Loudoun is virtualization. Earlier this year, the county’s Department of Information Technology expanded its server virtualization program, which allows for multiple servers to be housed in a single physical unit and which results in greater energy and resource efficiency.
Loudoun County also provides many services through its website, www.loudoun.gov. Some of the website’s newer features include: online registration for electronic personal property tax billing; economic development business and industry site availability tools; “WebLogis 2.0,” the next generation of the county’s innovative online mapping system; online Reverse 911 registration for cellphones; an online job search resource maintained by the Loudoun County Workforce Resource Center; and an online “How Did We Do?” service response card.
Another web-based service is the Alert Loudoun system, which allows residents to receive e-mails or text messages over their cellular phones or pagers. Subscribers can receive alerts in various categories, such as road closures, safety information, news releases, sports cancellations, emergency situations, and tax deadline information.
The website also provides easy access to Loudoun County’s social media sites, including Facebook (www.facebook.com/LoudounCountyVa), Twitter (www.twitter.com/loudouncogovt), and YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/loudouncountyva).
