The two-year anniversary of the shooting death of an Hispanic man outside Sterling Park Shopping Mall passed quietly this month with authorities still unable to put someone behind bars.
Sketch of shooting suspect.Around 9:30 p.m. on June 7, 2008, Sterling’s Danilo Jose Ramirez-Vega, 26, was gunned down near the Big Lots store after the Sheriff’s Office said he got into an argument with two other Hispanic males.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Ramirez-Vega on the mall’s parking lot. He was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about two hours later.
Witnesses told investigators the suspects fled the scene on bikes. Several days after the shooting, investigators were able to piece together a composite sketch of one of the men, which is available with this story. It’s unclear if the shooting was gang related.
Two thousand and eight was a particularly violent year in Sterling Park. Three months later, three people were injured in a spray of bullets during a drive-by shooting at the intersection of East Poplar Road and Buckingham Court. Also in late 2008, two teens were shot and injured on North Argonne Avenue. Soon after, a hastily organized community meeting was held at Park View High School, where angry residents demanded that the county allocate more resources to improving the quality of life in Sterling Park.
Since 2008, high-profile crimes have quieted down, as Ramirez-Vega's murder was the last one in Sterling Park. Rapes, aggravated assaults, burglaries and robberies are also down in this eastern Loudoun community since 2008, according to the Sheriff's Office. Adding to the safer atmosphere, this month the agency opened its first stand-alone station outside of Leesburg in Sterling Park so patrols can remain in their beats longer.
Besides what was made public in several press releases issued two summers ago, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said the agency is unable to release additional information about the Rameriz-Vega shooting at this time over concerns it could compromise the “outcome” of the case.
He did say, though, that the case remains active and that local investigators are working with other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, as the case likely “spans” several jurisdictions.
Authorities can still use the public's help. Anyone with information about Ramirez-Vega’s murder can call Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919. If the information leads to an arrest and indictment, the caller could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
The Independent was unable to find contact information for Rameriz-Vega’s family to get their reaction to his still unsolved murder.
