Visiting the Battle of Ball's Bluff
Date: April 13, 2021 09:05AM

I run a podcast called Walking History where I visit local historic sites and discuss their history and what it's like to visit them today - I recently toured and did an episode on The Battle of Ball's Bluff. I was very impressed with the condition of the battlefield, it felt like a full-immersion experience into the past, and the story of the battle certainly surprised me. Before visiting I had never even heard of the engagement, let alone the fact that it was the only time in US history that a sitting US Senator was killed in battle.

I'd love to hear the thoughts you all have on it! I've also done episodes on other local historic sites, including The First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), The Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) and John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry.

The Balls Bluff Park has a lot of supernatural events occurring around it. If you are at all a sensitive, you will have a ball camping out in the battleground there.

I lived on the battlefield area close to Balls Bluff for a while, and would hike the trails there as often as possible with the roommates' dogs. One of them was sensitive. On a particular day, late in the afternoon, I approached the graveyard area when suddenly the dogs stopped and with hackles bristling, got in front of me and would not budge forward or allow me to continue on the path to the river edge bluff. I stared and stared, looking for people or animals or snakes, but could see nothing that would have frightened the dogs. They allowed me to back up, and I took an alternate trail that branched off to the left and away from the bluff, located before you reach the area of the graveyard.

On other hikes through there, I have found other weird things. On a trail past a small pond, there was a site where some wiccans had done a chicken sacrifice and the painted sigils and feathers and stuff still littered the path. Another time, on a remote trail heading toward the river launch access point road, I found a pile of what looked like long white sheep's fur on the ground on the trail, along with a split hoof on a leg bone and a shotgun shell. On another trip, there were what appeared to be 2 freshly dug graves, about 2 feet by 3 feet in area, off to the side of the trail. Another trip along the river bluff, I noted some pot plant seedlings popping up along the side of that trail. Those hiking around in the area should probably keep their eyes open and their head on a swivel, there are some weird goings on in that park area. A woman was found in the land adjacent to the park in a shed that had been burned that year, around the same time that another person committed suicide in the park.
