General Warning received from Edelman Financial:
I’m writing to warn you about a new scam that is targeting the DC metro area.
The Internal Revenue Service just informed us that a new phishing scam is targeting local residents. The crooks are sending emails that look like they are from the IRS in an effort to trick you into revealing your personal information.
In this case, the scammers are citing tax fraud and asking you to provide the last four digits of your Social Security number through a link provided in the email. The scam even says this is specifically for tax filers in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
If you receive an email of this nature, DO NOT click on any links. If you do, the crooks may be able to steal your personal information.
Contact us today or call us at 888-PLAN-RIC (888-752-6742) if you receive any suspicious emails. One of my colleagues at Edelman Financial will help you verify whether the email is legitimate and what you should do next. At Edelman Financial, we’re dedicated to protecting you and your personal finances.
