The former President of the Upper Loudoun Youth Football League was arrested and charged Thursday with embezzling roughly $50,000 from the youth organization, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Raymond J. Taylor, 44, of Purcellville, was charged with six counts of felony embezzlement. Authorities said Taylor is accused of stealing the funds between February and September 2011 while he was president of the youth football league.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office learned of the possible theft in late September after board members of the Upper Loudoun Youth Football League discovered irregularities in the league’s accounts, officials said.
The Upper Loudoun Youth Football League hosted a well-attended meeting Monday evening in Purcellville, where it was announced that board member Kevin Keane would replace Taylor as President. Taylor resigned Sept. 13, according to the league.
At the meeting, Keane read a statement to the crowd stating that the league had hired an accountant to conduct an audit of the league’s accounts, expected to be completed by Oct. 31.
“We have also retained a lawyer to guide us through this situation,” Keane said in the statement. “Because of the ongoing investigation, we have been advised not to make further statements until additional information is available.”
The league declined to comment further following the news of Taylor’s arrest Friday.
