Graduation party turns sour against the Salahis

A tour of Virginia’s wineries seemed the perfect way to celebrate her college graduation, but Emily McCallum could not surmise how the joyful occasion would turn into sour grapes.

Loudoun resident McCallum claims she paid notorious White House state party crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi $300 for a wine tour that included a stop at Tareq’s family-owned Oasis Winery in Hume. The couple last year filmed scenes at Oasis Winery for the “Real Housewives of D.C.,” a reality TV show starring Michaele Salahi.

McCallum claims the Warren County couple reneged on their agreement, canceling her tour on such short notice that she, her friends and her family could not secure a wine tour for the same day. The group eventually celebrated her graduation at only one winery, despite it already hosting another event the same day, McCallum said. Additionally, she claims the Salahis did not refund her money.

A months-long journey through the Loudoun County General District Court has ensued.

McCallum has been to court twice, once on July 18 and again on Aug. 3, to face the couple who are allegedly indebted to her. Neither the Salahis nor their lawyer were present at the hearings. The court told McCallum that it had not yet received a return of service from the Salahis nor their lawyer, so it is unclear whether they have knowledge of the case against them.

This is not the first time the couple has been before a judge for warrants in debt.

In addition to McCallum’s case, Tareq Salahi is listed on two other cases in Loudoun County for warrants in debt. In April 2009, Sunbelt Rentals Inc. took Tareq Salahi to court for a warrant in debt, but the judge found in favor of Salahi. The second case was filed by the law office of Joe S. Ritenour, which the law firm won.

Tareq Salahi has no active or inactive cases against him in Fairfax County, save for a speeding ticket in September 2005. Salahi faces two warrant in debt cases against him in Arlington County. The first, in July 2009, was brought against him by Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley, Emrich and Walsh, which the plaintiffs won. The second case, filed by Kerri C. Chek, is ongoing. The next hearing is in September.

A search for Tareq Salahi in the Warren County District Court, the county in which the couple resides, results in 10 active cases against him, seven of which are listed as “warrant in debt,” alleging that he owes money to the plaintiff.

On Dec. 5, 2008, Mike Dunbar filed a warrant in debt against Tareq Salahi, which he won. That same day, Tareq Salahi also faced warrant in debt cases from Travis Frantz and Mosby Estates Homeowners Association, both of which were dismissed. Additionally on Dec. 5, 2008, Steve Winter took Tareq Salahi to court for a warrant in debt, but that case is listed as “other judgment.” David Cope filed suit against Tareq Salahi in February and December 2009, once for a warrant in debt, which he won, and another for garnishment, but that case was closed. In November 2009, Pierre Pirault filed a warrant in debt against Tareq Salahi, which was settled as a non-suit.

Tareq Salahi faces more than 10 cases in Fauquier County, three of which were marked as warrants in debt. Laura Rhinehart’s case against Salahi was dismissed in 2008, but Grady Morris and Jerome Farmer won warrant in debt cases against Salahi in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
McCallum’s case will go before the court again in November.
