Schools Open Monday For Students; Motorists Urged To Use Caution

School supply aisles have already been pillaged, summer camps are only a memory and youngsters are groaning about the end of free days one moment and rejoicing over their new school gear the next.

It's no secret that Monday is the first day of school for Loudoun County Public Schools. That's a week earlier than the school division has started in years past.

Some private schools, such as Leesburg Christian School, have followed suit to begin Monday. Others, such as Loudoun Country Day School, begin as late as Sept. 7.

Loudoun's public school division needed a waiver from the Virginia Board of Education to begin the school year the week prior to Labor Day. The School Board voted to bump up the start date because it wanted more academic time to prepare for state tests in May.

More time in the classroom is the last thing on 8-year-old Savannah Metz's mind, however. Although she was excited to load a shopping cart at Target with her choice of flowered notebooks and multi-colored pencils, she's less than eager to return to Mill Run Elementary School next week.

"It's not really fair," she said of returning one week early. "Summer went way too fast."

It's not just the students who'd opt for one more week in the sun. Monica Franco of Leesburg said it's tough for her two young sons to begin school one week before their cousins in Fairfax County Public Schools. Plus, it's not easy to get them into a regular sleeping schedule when a three-day Labor Day weekend follows the first week of school.

"It's hard for them to get into the school mode and then have a long weekend," she said. "I just don't like that."

The school division's enrollment is expected to tally 66,266 Monday and increase within the first three weeks of school. The division's newest school, J. Lunsford Middle School, opens to bring the total of public schools and centers to 80. As of this week, the division also has 8,840 full-time equivalent employees, including 4,829 teachers.

Administrators urge drivers to use caution on the roads as the school division's large fleet of buses hit the street next week, as well as the thousands of students who walk to school.
