For one group of diabetic American Indians, Leesburg is just another stop on an epic walk across America.

The Longest Walk 3: Reversing Diabetes, or LW3, is a more than 5,000-mile walk across America in order to raise awareness to and fight diabetes.

“This is about reversing diabetes through a raw food diet and exercise,” Virginia Coordinator Curt Hansen said. “Diabetes is a pandemic really, it doesn’t know color barriers. It gets everybody.”

LW3 started in Portland, Ore. and San Diego, Ca. on Feb. 14.

“Six of those walking today have walked all the way from Portland,” Hansen said. “All the way through snow and blizzards.”

The group reached Leesburg on July 5, taking off from Loudoun County High School in their jaunt towards Historic Downtown Leesburg.

Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement in Minneanapolis, Minn. and a leader in the armed takeover of Wounded Knee in 1973, led the walk through Leesburg while sporting a feathered headdress.

Banks, whose resume includes stints in four Hollywood movies, included last of the Mohicans, was diagnosed with diabetes last year but has reversed it through diet and exercise.

The group will arrive in Washington, D.C. just in time for the 2011 National Summit on Diabetes.

“We live in a fast world now,” Hansen said. “Fast food and less time changes everything. We’re not going out to the garden to get our fresh food and water anymore, we’re sitting in a drive-through. This is a very good message, it’s us getting back to our roots.”
