School Board Authorizes Elementary School Site Purchase

As the school system looks forward to the completion of Lunsford Middle School next fall that may not be the end to its construction projects in the area. Tuesday night the board voted to purchase two adjacent lots for a future elementary school and perhaps additional uses.
School staff members said the $4.23 million purchase includes 48 acres on the south side of Braddock Road just east of the new middle school.
It was not clear when the school would be built.
School Board member Robert F. DuPree (Dulles) said that enrollment projections document the need for four additional elementary schools in the Dulles South area. One is likely to be built in the East Gate project, a previously rejected site getting a new round of review at the urging of the Board of Supervisors. The two lots to be purchased from the Grant family represent land for a third school.
School Board members noted that the purchase includes more land than is typically required for an elementary school, providing opportunities for other uses. Also, they said, the location would allow for joint programs with the middle school.
The two undeveloped lots, totaling only 38.76 acres in the county government's online property records database, are assessed at a combined value of $880,000.
