Large bees in Burke

Has anyone else been seeing these huge hornet like bees in the Burke area? I killed one the other night at like mid-night flying around our porch light. First off, what bees come out at night like that, attracted to the light? I'm not exagerrating these things are enormous! Yellow head, brown/yellow body and skinny wings. Where the heck are they coming from?

Nigger bees.

As the previous poster deduced, most likely from Africa.

I also thought they were cicada killers at first but these things do not look like that. These are huge and they look almost like a giant yellow jacket, there is something called an Asian Giant Hornet, it looks more like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet

Two years ago there was one of these in my house, I swatted it and it hit the wall and was laying on the carpet. My phone rang so I went and answered it and was planning to scoop the bee up and flush it but I forgot after I got off the phone. Fast forward about five hours and its now 2am and I'm dead asleep. This thing was only stunned and when it came too it must have crawled across the floor and climbed up the bedding. I guess it was on my toe and in my sleep I felt it and used my other foot to scratch my toe, I immediately came awake when that thing stung me. I've been stung by many yellow jackets at one time when I ran over a nest cutting my grandfathers lawn, probably 15 to 20 stings if not more and this was much worse than that. This was the worst pain I've ever felt from a bee, it was hard to walk on my left foot for two days.

is what youre seeing.

theyre NBD unless you really jack with 'em. all over the place where i live, especially when the cicadas are in full force. i've seen more cidada's meet their maker at the stings of this wasp than i've ever seen by a true cicada killer.

I just killed a nest at my house too.... exactly like you side, they look like giant fatter hornets or wasps. They have a lot more yellow on them. They're huge and seem to go towards light even thought they seem to not go out during the day much. They didn't seem overly aggressive, just huge as crap. Good ol' wasp spray killed them instantly no sweat.

Ah, yup, definitely European hornets. To a T. Less aggressive and attracted to light.

I encountered one this morning. The thing came out of no where and flew to my porch light. The stupid thing was enormous and kept running into the walls until he landed on my porch light. Wasp spray took care of him . 5 mins later a more agressive buddy came.. wasp spray took care of him as well.

A few weeks ago I saw one that always flew outside my window , brownish in color and really big with a defined abdomen, then this past week my dad and I were opening the house door we looked up and there was a gigantic nest with like 30 of them flying through it! My dad went out and got bee killing foam and that was the end of then outside my window. Had no fucking idea what these things were.

We have them here in Chester County too. You never see them during the day, but as soon as it gets dark and the porch light is on - wham, there they are. Large bees about 1-1.5" long. Circling the light, drop to the ground & then back to the light. I went outside about 30 mins. ago with no shoes. Yeah, got stung. I've been stung before by other bees but this one is unbelievably painful. Anyone know what kind of bees they are ???

I have had quite a few of them, as described, showing up in the evenings through 4-5 am when it's still dark... similarly attacking porch light. I though I created these obese/abnormally big bees as I had a lot (really) pears falling off the trees and fermenting on the ground. Seen them festing "in" the fruits. How does one get rid of them?

Hi! Same thing at my house... they are called Cicada killing bees. They have nests on the ground that look like piles of dirt and rock. You can have an Exterminator come and treat the nests. We had 3 or 4! That's what I did. They were gone for awhile but started coming back at night, like you said, and moved over to my patio. They were also attracted to the porch light and came at night, mostly in the evening. We kept the light off and with the colder weather, I haven't seen many lately. I checked out a few websites and you can also dig the nests out and move them somewhere else. That's if you are into saving the bees although I wouldn't recommend pulling out the old shovel unless you are a professional. I read the nests can go a few feet deep into the ground! Supposedly harmless but very scary looking and I wouldn't trust the whole harmless thing with this many of this type of bee around. Good luck to you!

I saw a 2" today outside of Giant in Springfield. I was putting my groceries in the car and it was sitting on the fender of my SUV. It sacred the crap out of me. I tried to get a picture of it put it began to take flight. Unlike the other post it came out in the day light hours. Glad to know that I am not crazy. PHEW

The ones in my house over the years (have killed 3 in 7 years) were very large as described but there did not have the orange hew to them that the Giant Asian Hornets do. They were black and gold like a honey bee but were enormous, a couple of inches in length. Wondering if it these were Giant European Hornets as opposed to Giant Asian Hornet ... just looked like Huge Elongated Honey Bees to me.

I live in North Springfield off Braddock Road. I have not seen any in or around my home a couple of years.

Killed each of the 3 which entered my home with Hornet foam spray .. shoots up to 20 feet and covers them so they cannot fly and kills them.
