Is it me or is the checkout service terrible at this store? I was there last night around 7 pm and they had three registers open and the self check out closed.

The lines were at least ten deep. One woman was so frustrated she yelled at the clerk why dont you open the self check out since it can handle four customers at once. The clerk just shook her head.

Evening times are horrible at this store.

I've been mad about this for years. I asked a clerk once and she said it's a union-imposed rule. The Union wants to limit the use of the self-checkout. They're afraid it will make cashiers obsolete.
Store owners have every incentive to make customers happy, they should be making store policy.

I wonder if Wisconsin grocery stores now that that problem...

Wisconsin has only restricted the collective bargaining rights for non-essential, public workers, and even then only for their benefits. They still can collectively bargain for their wages. Cops, firemen, and private-sector workers are not affected. And apparently, that was a bridge that is WAY too far for some reason ...
Even Franklin Roosevelt knew that unionization of public workers would ruin this nation. Here's to hoping we learn to face facts and act responsibly.

I should have kept my mouth shut, went there today and only two registers open, long lines waiting. I cant believe a large grocery store chain like Safeway tolerates this shit. Although the self serve was open only two were operating, two others broken.

All the Safeways around here suck. Ravensworth, Twinbrooke, Lee Chapel/Old Keene Mill. Never have enough registers open and slow as molasses. It's why a lot of people shop at Costco. Many things are cheaper at Safeway and you don't have to buy enough for the next decade, but it takes twice as long to buy half as many items.

Less than 20% of the workers at that store are black.
If you think you're going to intimidate people by calling them racists, then you're living in the past.
