Is anyone else being screwed by the Burke Centre Conservancy?

I've actually been pretty happy with them. Certainly, the rules dictate what you can do, but the rules and process both seem reasonable. We've probably gone through the process of getting approval about 6 times in the past 6 years.

I've heard the horror stories of other HOAs taking months to approve simple requests and overzealous enforcement. I've also lived in a neighborhood in Arlington that didn't have an HOA - most of the neighbors were fine, but there were a few issues that really got old over time.

What exactly is BCC doing to you?

Why are you complaining? You knew or had access to the rules before you moved in...

I have been here for 11 years. This is the first time they have given me any problems. Apparently I am on their radar for anything and everything.

Every time I fix what they ask me to, suddenly the list changes.. Thats bullshit.

As soon as they start paying my mortgage payments then they can tell me what I can plant in my front yard.

What have they asked you to fix? Are these things that you did without going through the ARB, or what?

When Burke Centre was new, we looked for a home there. When I found out it was a "planned" community with a huge HOA, we quit looking. Besides, we wanted natural gas heating and I don't think anybody in BC has that.

For 25 years, we have lived in a house with no HOA and no neighborhood problems. There are too many little Napoleons in HOAs.

I believe they put natural gas in BC in 1997.

It seems that BC doesn't have the Napoleons that I've also heard of, or at least they haven't messed with any of the requests we've put into the ARB. I've been happy with the BC HOA, but it is an HOA, and they do tell you what to do.

Glad you're happy with your neighborhood; at the end of the day, that's what's important.

Anyone that thinks that Burke HOA isn't a dictatorship needs to think again. The person that stated that you new what you were getting into when you moved there isn't totally correct either. The rules change over the years and they think that they own your house and want you to maintain it with items that weren't available for 30+ years (like outside lights).

The HOA fees continue to rise and we have to pay for everything in the neighborhood (pool) when the HOA has millions of dollars in reserve. An HOA should be volunteer and we shouldn't have a paid staff period!

If you complain to the HOA, you are now on the watch list. I think all the people who wanted to make in Washington and would didn't need to move out of the area because that is all that is on the HOA.

Here's how you fix that... Join the fucking HOA yourself. Then you can pretty much see how it functions from the inside and quit bitching about it.

You think the HOA gets paid for maintaining the community? Fuck no! It's Volunteered time fool.

Attend the meetings... Get a copy of the guidelines... When the time comes to vote for new board members, nominate yourself and get some people to back you up. Then run the fucking thing yourself.

Just sitting back and not attending meetings simply just automatically re-seats the current board members.

I have no problem with the HOA if they would just clamp down on the towelhead down the street about running a used car lot out of his home.

This may help out a little.

I've lived in Burke since the late 90s. The Conservancy/HOA does a good job. The fees are reasonable. They keep your neighbors from having cars up on blocks in their yard, or doing other stupid crap. When I wanted to put a few new windows in my house, I called the HOA, and they helped me fill out the right forms -- no problem. If you're hating on the HOA, odds are that you got caught doing something you shouldn't be doing.

Burke Centre has a big HOA because it's a big community -- it couldn't be run on a day-to-day basis by volunteers only.

Your tone is arrogant. It is not that simple. After we moved into our single family home, the rules changed. In addition, we have neighbors who the HOA went after with a vengeance to fix a problem that was on conservancy property.
One of the family members was dying of cancer. The HOA still went after them with arrogance and stupidly. As the OP shows, it depends on who you talk to.
