Robert E. Lee High School
Posted by: New Parent ()
Date: February 25, 2016 04:03PM

What do current parents at Robert E. Lee High School think of it?

We were planning to have our child placed at West Springfield High School or Lake Braddock Secondary School next year for AP courses but I understand from teacher friends that that option will no longer be available.

Instead my child will have the option of taking all of their AP classes at Lee. I like how my child can get college credit for the courses they take rather than do the whole Intl. Bacc. course load.

Its not what I was hoping for but I will keep an open mind.

Most of my neighbors and friends place their children elsewhere.

My teacher friend said to give Lee High a try since the new Principal is trying to make it a magnet school where parents will want their kids to attend rather than sending them elsewhere.

I will see how it goes.

AP is better degree.
Research it yourself.
More colleges accept AP than IB.
Send your child to Lake Braddock.
I dont believe they can stop you from sending them elsewhere for AP.
If they did, they would have to build another school directly beside it for the 1500 Lee kids currentli at other schools.
There would be a political firestorm if they tried.
Look at the scores of the schools and what parents say about the schools. Dont bother asking school staff.

If you're actually a parent that's actually researching schools and you're posting on FFU your child already has no hope. Have you even taken a cursory glance at any other posts here? Mystifying

If Lee now offers the same as WS or LB in terms of AP stuff, and you are in Lee zoning.. then your kid is going to Lee.

Lee High School is not a regular neighborhood school anymore. It is a special spanish speaking school. They are doing a great job with hispanics. Only a few white kids and practically no African Americans attend. The sports program is awful even soccer which you would think the Hispanics would be good in.
The entire staff from top to bottom hates the new Principal. She is rude and disrespectful to the staff. They laugh at her when she tries to talk curriculum to them. I hear she never was at the high school level before coming to Lee. Excellent choice for a high school principal.

Reminder to all Daventry families,
If you haven't heard, the Principal at Lee is trying to prevent us from pupil placing at West Springfield HS & Lake Braddock SS.
We plan to schedule meetings with school board members, county board members, and the media. Several members of our community are lawyers and they have offered to help. Its time to organize to counter this assault on our community. Here is the link to our community association website for further info: http://www.daventry.org/

Lee is a mess. Look at their scores. West Springfield is ok. Lake Braddock is far superior. Put in your pupil placement request as soon as possible. Like now.
It takes time. Submit it then push it through Lee for approval.

So the escape hatch for families wanting to avoid Robert E. Lee is being closed to keep kids in? Is that how they intend to make that school a magnet?
For the amount of money I pay in taxes, I should not have to send my kids to school in Mexico!

You're a racist. It would be wise of Fairfax county residents to help make lee and the surrounding areas a better place because it only benefits Fairfax County in the end to grow and prosper. By avoiding this school and it's potential you are not helping Fairfax County or the school.

Sad we've come to the point where culturally homogeneous barrios have replaced the diversity that was here in the past -- the burbs have changed a lot.

The main issue is the language barrier --- it's not the students fault.

Speaking as a current senior at Lee, I have a love/hate relationship with the school. A huge part of this school doesn't perform well (and I think it's mostly because of language barriers/financial struggles/etc) but that doesn't apply to everyone. My friends and I take IB classes and we ended up doing well (I've gotten into VT + UVA). I also really love the diversity; it sounds cliche but switching from a predominately white middle school to an extremely diverse high school had a huge positive impact on me (plus International Night is always AMAZING because of the endless cultures shared).
Funny enough, my younger sister opted to go to Lake Braddock instead and she's struggling. I think if it's academics that you're worried about then it really depends on your kid and their work habits rather than the school (especially since Lee's offering AP now).

Thank you for your honest comment.
The fact that your sister is struggling at Lake Braddock indicates that the level of instruction is more challenging. That's where I want my daughter to attend.

Sumai, you clearly did not read the post...the girl at LB is her sister...she says her sistern's work habits are not strong, that is why she is not doing well. It is not the curriculum, which, you may not know, is the same curriculum throughout the county.

Don't come here to Lee high school.
It is a terrible place.
Kids run the halls, fight, curse, mock other students that try to listen to the teachers,
Hayfield is much better if you can arrange it. I plan to live with a relative next year so I can get out of here.

I go to another school by using an address in another school zipcode. It can be a friend or relatives house. Just so they pass mail along to your family. Easiest way out of Lee and doesnt need the Principal's approval. He is not involved in the process. The motto for the school with my friends is " Flee Lee!"!!!

Please don't go to lee. It's honestly a terrible high school. The IB program is useless; AP is much better and preferred for colleges, and if you can't switch because of that then either fake an address or find a way. i hate it here so much, you'll see 30% of the kids in this school skipping by hanging out in the hallways or in the bathrooms (disgusting), and the administration is even worse. i feel like i'm in a prison or like cattle with the amount of harrasment i get from them stalking the hallways (which funny enough doesn't stop the people actually skiping). everything at lee is shitty and you're better off going to lake braddock or somewhere else.

I went to Yorktown high school in Arlington va a well rated school and kids still skipped. Administration was bad too. It really depends on the student and parent involvement so the admin knows you are serious.

I went to Lee and Graduated in 3 years because of the hard work I put in. Got accepted in UVA's Medical program but unfortunately could not attend because my father got diagnosed with Cancer and decided to give all my college savings to his treatment. I currently attend NOVA and will simply transfer to UVA after my 2 years.

Point is that if you did your job as a parent, you should not worry about the school your child attends. They should know right from wrong and know who to stay away from and know that school always comes first. Every school has their extreme flaws and the group of "horrible" children. A west springfield student stabbed and killed my friend and my cousin went to lake braddock and was introduced to cocaine in a bathroom and is currently in jail for the possession and intent of distributing of cocaine. And me? Well I went to lee and am currently working in an Urgent Care and have a 3.8 GPA in school, no drugs, no alcohol and no cocaine and murders.

So please, do not bash my highschool because your child doesnt know better. I love Lee.

Why so many Lee HS haters? I highly suspect the trolls bashing the high school aren't even from the area but from the boondocks of Virginia and not in Fairfax County. Any intelligent and loyal Fairfax County resident won't bash a school in his county but support growth and improvement of that high school to help fairfax county prosper and grow.

All these asswipes bitching about Lee don't know that it was worse back in the 90's through mid 2000's, there were gangs like the crips, bloods, MS13, vietnamese gangs, etc. Nowadays the school is Disneyland compared to back then. I went to Lee in 2003-2007 so I know what I'm talking about.

A true statement about Lee High School.

I was part of transportation in the County in 95. The various gangs living in the Central Springfield area were diverse.

You, sir or madam, are ignorant.
I do not teach at Lee but I am aware that throughout our Melting Pot of the USA, children are here from South America, and othe countries.

I and from criminal defendants that arrived up North in the late 1700s. Participate in the Colonial Dames and DAR.

The students at Lee are bright. They may not have the privilege of being a 5th or Nth generation in the USA, but, they are Americans.

I graduated from Lee three years ago

I have no idea how anyone can say they liked Robert E. Lee High School. The school itself is an insult to the General they named it after.

Many of the teachers are lazy and/or biding their time until their tenure hits. There are some very dedicated teachers, but they are few and far between.

As far as students go, drugs is a larger problem than most people think. Sure, there isnt the same gang violence in school as before; that's because it's all moved outside of school. Even then, I heard there's been a few bomb threats made a year or two ago.

The diversity, unless you are from a Spanish or Indian Subcontinent racial/culture group, will alienate you. Contrary to what most people think of this area, Racial Tensions are very high; people just keep it to themselves more than other regions (Maybe it's all the office sensitivity training kicking in?).

Anyway, I'd rate Robert E. Lee a 3/10 send your children elsewhere. Let the damn school rot

As a graduate of LHS from 2001, I wouldn't have wanted to go anywhere else. Coming from lily-white Washington Irving, it certainly was different but that ended up being a great thing for myself and those that also came with me from Irving.

I made many life-long friends and was exposed to more culture than I'd ever be exposed to if I went to WSHS with the rest of my middle school friends. Sure it wasn't perfect and the school had problems but it was better than pretending that life is always perfect in suburbia. It helped me grow as a person.

Bottom line is, if your kid has good morals, is smart, and works hard they will do well ANYWHERE they go. If you are the kind of parent that will blame the shortcomings of your child on the school, then it doesn't matter where your little darling goes because you'll never be happy.

All of the other kids that came from good, supportive families (that I can think of) are all doing very well too. Several of my buddies are on their way to becoming millionaires through business ventures that they started after school.

After graduating from Lee and getting accepted to several excellent colleges, I am making great money in a fantastic career, and live in a huge house. Life is awesome, and I honestly can't say it would have all gone so well if I had gone to WSHS instead.

Knowledge is power and FCPS needs to investigate staff student relations. Lee/Lewis students know the truth about female coaches sleeping with players and selling drugs to students the principal does care I guess because he’s new.
