The kitchen caught on fire the other day. No ETA on how long PUB or Peking Imperial will be closed. I guess it's Mckeever's for everyone for a little while.

Man that sucks dude. I had to run to CVS earlier, and after reading your post I decided to walk around the corner and take a look. It doesn't look damaged from the outside, but there was a faint burn smell. Someone actually walked in the restaurant side while I was there, but the signs say it's closed, it must have been someone cleaning the place up.

I sure hope they re-open- it would suck not having that place around!

According to Ghanniand David - I saw them yesterday (June 24) - they should be open again in about 2 weeks. Ghanni plans a big reopening party - probably Greg as a DJ but maybe a band instead. And, by the way Jen, Kelly and Amber, the CD will be out by next month. Waterstones of London pre-ordered 200 copies (via my agent in the UK). If you're up for it, we'll debut it one Friday night after the Pub reopens.

I know one of you is bound to be respobnsible for this web site. Fess up - who is it? And, can you get David to buy some new dartboards before the grand reopening?

A band, or DJ? That doesn't sound like David's M.O., but who knows. I seriously doubt Jen, Amber, or Kelly frequent this site. I know Kelly does Myspace, but FU? Doubt it! As far as the dart boards, Gary N. replaced the old ones like a year or two ago. The old ones were bubbling up and looked like they grew tumors!!

Cary, and Cary alone, is responsible for this site. Although Amber does graphic design, she is not responsible for this site.

Somehow, I doubt it. Neither Amber or Tavis seem all that concerned about FU.

The pub has been closed for almost a month.

AND, why doesn't he turn Asian Corner into a temporary pub, until he reopens?

I haven't talked to Dave, so I don't know what happened, but is it possible that he violated some fire code and is shut down either indefinitely or permanently?

I know he's losing good money right now. So are Jen, Amber, Kelley and Ghani, they are basically unemployed until Dave opens back up. Dave's got Asian Corner and his restaurants in Rockville.

Why doesn't he close Asian Corner a little early and move all the tables and open up the place as a bar? I know there are lots of people in Mclean who would meet up at Asian Corner if Dave opened it up for drinking. Hell, people go to Ocean M to hang out at the bar. If he wanted to, he could make some money.

Every time I see Mark at Giant, when he's gathering up all the shopping carts, he won't look me in the eye.

Jen isn't a "hippie chick".


She's a very smart girl from Croatia.

Hippie chicks are well-off, upper middle class girls who don't shower and smell funny.

Jen is an educated person who reads alot, has a natural intellectual curiousity and does her job very well.

You could, by your standards, call any of Dave's bartenders "hippy", but that is only because you are an idiot and closed minded.

LOL!!! You shouldn't make fun of the emotionally/mentally challenged. However, after seeing him pretend to be tripped by customers, when they did nothing of the sort, who knows? It did happen in the kitchen, so anything's possible! I think he may have Asperger's or some other form of high functioning autism or social/emotional impediment.

This Mark guy you're talking about.... is he the guy that works for Giant, the one who collects the shopping carts out of the parking lot? He seems a bit "slow" and usually says stuff to people walking out of the store.

Ocean M is across the parking lot from there near the corner of Old Dominion and Beverly. It's a pretty swanky seafood place with a piano player on the weekends. LOL- I'm starting to wish I never even used the term "hippy". It certainly wasn't meant to be disparaging, I think she is cute. And it's not like I'd say that to someone's face: like I'd walk in there and say "Hey, how's it going there ya HIPPY?"

I just thought it would be more recognizable to use that term, rather than say "the one bartender is nice, you know, the one with the natural intellectual curiosity, the one that likes to read".

I also find it funny that people are posting here about that Mark guy from Giant... I say hi to that guy like once or twice a week and it's bizarre that he is being talked about here on FU.

The fact remains that the establishment where the pub remains is going to be torn down within the next two years. David probably will put some money into reopening it, but there is a great chance it might never open again. He is adamant in the idea of reopening, but due to inspecting codes, licenses, and permits, the time it is taking to retain these documents, it is going to be a while. Both to get the permits and to actually get working on fixing what is wrong. Sit back and relax, if it opens it does, if it doesn't go see kelly at thirsty bernie's, she'll tell you what's going on.

Where did you hear that?? That whole side of the shopping center torn down?

I know they are re-aligning some of the streets around there, but the plans I saw said nothing about removing that building.

I've been telling this to David for almost a year now. There is the whole "McLean Town Center" project, that is going to relocate the firehouse, and rebuild the entire area as a "pedestrian friendly downtown center".

Why do you think McLean Hardware moved into the old Giant Gourmet?

I've been trying to tell David to get involved so they don't drive him out. I can imagine there are people who would love to drive the pub out of Mclean.

You must have been there the same night I was, back in March or April, I can't remember the exact date, but some sorority type went ballistic when Amber asked why her party only tipped her like a buck thirty on a $100 check.

Just about everyone in the bar chased the ditz out of the bar when she started calling Amber a slut. Ironically, Tavis (the guy she's been dating for over a year, at least) walked in just after that bitch called Amber a slut.

Mark told me that he was shot in the head when his father was an Ambassador to Argentina.

There was a kidnapping, but it didn't get farther than him being taken off a street, driven off somewhere and shot in the head and left for dead.

But he also used to tell me, before he suddenly decided to hate on me, that he loves to take the bus to Atlantic city in order to gamble.

When I asked if he might be to blame, it was because in the months before the fire, he was becoming more agressive and hateful towards many of the regulars, and eventually David recognized it and started asking him to stay away. It is not inconceivable that one of the few times he was allowed to stay and help out that he "accidentally" did something to cause a grease fire while making chicken fingers or whatever.

I talked to David about 3 weeks ago, I ran into him when I was walking out of Asian Corner picking up some tempura, and he told me "middle of september". Well, it's now the last week of september, and still no pub.

I asked him how he's going to get people to come back, and he said "don't worry, it will take a few weeks, but people will tell people. They'll be back."

I just hope that Jen, Amber and Kelly haven't found alternative employment. They really made that bar. It won't have the same character and clientelle if they don't come back.

I eat at Asian Corner every once in a while, and they serve liquor. That means David has a liquor license. The only permit he might need to be concerned with is fire marshall occupancy certification.

As for being grandfathered, if he was grandfathered before the fire, he is grandfathered after the fire. Unless he changes ownership or location, he remains grandfathered.

Ocean M is the restaurant that replaced Amerigo, above Cafe Taj and across from Subway, on Beverly.

But McLean Hardware wasn't located in the same building as The PUB? The hardware store was over in that older strip of buildings with the green mansard roof. I could understand tearing that ugly thing down- it looks old. But the strip next to Giant where the PUB and Kazan are, I never heard anything about that getting ripped down.

They are going to redevelop the entire area. Which means they are going to either relocate or replace all of the businesses in that area.

Do you think the Chesapeake Bagel has a chance? Probably not.

Does Capri have a chance? If the owners have been actively working with the planners, they might have a chance.


If David isn't on the board or the commitee, he stands to be driven out by the people who are, or at least "accidentally overlooked"

I also look forward to it. I want them to increase my home's resale value.

I just don't want them to shut out David and the Pub. I've lived all over this country and in different parts of the world as a son of an Army Officer, and I've seen how these "redevelopment plans" can destroy a sole proprietor in favor of larger businesses. I can fully believe that they'll get rid of David and replace him with a TGI Fridays or a Tchotschkis.
