South Lakes High School gets a handful of smart white kids every year. However, I'm not exactly sure what sources you're looking at; I can't find them. Anyway, in the senior class alone, you have MAYBE 50 intelligent white kids out of a class of 600. South Lakes is a crap high school, and if I had been given the choice to go to a different high school, I would've taken it at the time. Unfortunately, I didn't think about pupil placement until it was far too late.

When the majority of a school thinks JMU, VCU, GMU, and Mary Washington are good choices, you end up with a relatively low-scoring group. They score enough to get into one of the aforementioned universities and not much higher.

Check the scores on greatschools.org. The Asian kids are doing fine at South Lakes so obviously it's not the schools fault.

Nice try at sarcasm. There are a lot of minorities at South Lakes. Many of them get some sort of accommodation.

McLean, Chantilly and Oakton all have smart white kids. Why not South Lakes?

Because every student, regardless of race, has potential, but not neccesarily dedication. Langston Hughes Middle School has so much potential, for example, but the students don't try. Some of the best students I've met are minorities, and some of the worst, are white. Race doesn't matter. Most of them act stupid, regardless of race.

Yes and no, not every student has potential. There are people who simply don't have the intellectual prowess to do well in school, regardless of how hard they work. However, I agree with what you say about dedication. Dedication can overcome lack of potential to a certain degree.

As for your comment about minorities vs. white students, there are very good reasons for that, which you seem to ignore or gloss over by saying "race doesn't matter." In the sense I believe you're using it in, race doesn't matter. However, certain races generally have cultural values in which education is held in much higher regard.

At SLHS, half the white kids you meet are below average.

Move before your kids hit high school. I guess that's the message for white parents.

They are too busy trying to get out of school in the new car mommy and daddy bought them. Seriously all the white kids in Reston either think they have it made and everything will be granted to them and the other part is some think they are urban and all they do is smoke pot all day. Sorry whites the future of your race is not at SLHS.

I went to SLHS years ago, worst high school in existence! All the teachers were boring and had to teach down to the minorities. I assume that is the standard by now. Of all the friends I started out with from Langston Hughes all had moved, put in private school or used band as an excuse to request to move to Langley except for one.

Two kids were in fights so badly they were taken out in ambulances. There were at least 3-4 gangs. Two friends were murdered by gangs/crazy boyfriend during that time. They were hispanic and I don't think their deaths even made a blimp on local news.

I would homeschool before I would ever send my kids to SLHS.

Only the white kids who's parents don't care about them go to SL. The ones with good parents or money pull them out and put them in private school or get redistricted to Langley.

Because most parents these days don't teach their kids common sense, materialism rules in Reston. Status means everything when living in Reston, not intelligence. Most parents BUY their kids love, whether it's a BMW, MK purse or whatever. These kids are raised thinking the world owes them a favor, then when they get out into the real world and see how it really is...they can't handle it and run back to mommy and daddy.

the school is overcrowded and the teachers are overworked. Bruce Butler used to walk the halls and make the teachers put the kids first. He knew the kids name and held them accountable. the new leadership does not even know the teaches names. Much less the kids. My daughter does not even know whom the principal is . Water fights are constant in the hall ways with no admin to be seen . The admin is also overworked gong from one fire to the next. Emails are never returned by the admin or counselors.If you have a senior you will have to follow up on deadline because the counselors will not send thing in time. Get your requests in early and if all possible go to anther school

I Love how much you like teenagers. I am not the original poster but I had a bunch of SLHS students in my card and I asked them who the principal was and took them five minutes to agree on the name . BTW Nice school you have with the kid who has overdosed on acid starburst in the cafeteria. His mom told me what a ghetto school you have. Maybe the problem isn't the teachers, but the fact that the kids are idiots. Lead can't be turned to gold. You have to actually have something to work with.

I know morale is bad a lot of teachers want to leave I know two admin leaving maybe it will get better. The admin and counselors I have dealt with seem extremly bored and unengaged. Some time the wrong kids name is on the progress report if you even get one . Oh well probably typical of an overcrowded public schools

I just found this, This is why you not should send your kid to SLHS this seems a pretty typical teacher at the school . You can tell this poster is burnt out I am sure this comes across in the class.

Most kids at most high schools are high.

You in all likelihood are not citing any actual test scores or statistics.

Choice in university or not attending has little direct correlation to intelligence. Same could be said for standardized test scores themselves to a degree.

This forum is just as detrimental to a young brain, or any brain as most drugs. Especially now apparently.

South Lakes is full of spoiled white kids who consider themselves "ghetto" and adopt the corresponding attitudes, which result in failure. A lot of them have permissive parents who let them do whatever they want, and the ones with stricter parents rebel and do whatever their idiot friends are doing, which tends to consist of doing drugs, getting each other pregnant, and trying to act like they're disadvantaged when they're not.

Students at TJ and Oakton have better grades because many, or in the case of TJ ALL of the students, are there because they care more about doing well in school.

No, "most" students at most high schools are NOT high. SOME of them are, and the ones that are getting high like to tell themselves that everyone is doing it so they can justify breaking the law and doing it. This attitude is especially prevalent at South Lakes.
