Do you consider Northern Virginia part of the South?

Although the whole of Virginia is below the Mason-Dixon line, Northern Virginia seems to be culturally different from the rest of the state. I attribute this to all the interlopers from other parts of the country moving to our area to work for the government. They bring with them their customs and beliefs from their places of origins and I feel this seriously dilutes NoVa's southern heritage. Despite this, do you still consider yourself a Southerner, and do can Northern Virginia still be considered culturally part of the South? Or is it becoming more like Silicon Valley on the East Coast?

Culturally or technically? no I do not cultrually see Virginia as a southern state same as I do not consider Maryland a southern state despite the fact that according to the mason dixon line it is. The Mason Dixon line was meant to define where one state officially ended and the other began. The object was not rivalry but how to best draw up accurate maps. The Mason Dixon line came waaaaay before the Civil War broke out. So the only thing Va is south of (Maryland as well) is a surveyed border between states. "The South" as in Civil War terms was a clusterf. Technically Maryland is south of the Mason Dixon line yet didnt turn and leave the Union.

The "south". The Mason Dixon line terminates at the south western corner of Pennsylvania. Texas considers itself a southern state which is incorrect etc. Northern Virginia itself should become the 51st state it is such a freeway of commerce and wealth.

During the darkest days of the Civil War Lincoln had actually drafted an agreement to bring General Lee to heel and allow Virginia to become its own nation with Lee as president.

NOVA may as well be Mars it is so vastly different than anywhere else in the world. Far to complex to simply be called "the south"
