Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Massive Unscheduled Downtime: 9/3/12 8:46pm - 9/10/12 7:45pm EDT
Posted by: Cary ()
Date: September 10, 2012 07:28PM

All,

Fairfax Underground (and the server hosting it) was taken offline by an unfounded abuse complaint to my previous ISP Carpathia Hosting. The specifics will be available shortly but needless to say I am very disappointed in the way Carpathia handled this case.

This server now has a new home with InfoRelay in Herndon, VA and for the first time since 2007 will once again reside in Fairfax County proper.

Since there was a massive outage I took the opportunity to transition this website to a brand new (MUCH faster) server and upgraded the operating system and all software. These upgrades included a much stricter "HTMLPurifer" module so any non-basic HTML is now disabled. Unfortunately this includes YouTube embeds, although an exception will be made for this shortly.

I will expand on this post greatly in the coming days, but the most important aspect right now is to bring the server back up as quickly as possible.

This has occurred twice before on 9/27/07 and 3/1/10

For the *nix nerds out there the old server had one hell of an uptime:
root ~ # uptime
19:25:22 up 850 days, 23:55, 2 users, load average: 0.02, 0.01, 0.00

More information coming shortly.

I am delighted to see this site back up—-and, honestly, I’m surprised by my sense of relief. I have missed this site this week and felt unsettled by its apparent demise. Why, I wondered? Despite years of browsing, I’ve never even registered, and sometimes I start to conclude I’ve visited in vain, as I become bored or bothered by crude humor, rambling diatribes, and nasty battles among individuals with whom I sense I have nothing in common. Yet eventually I always find something interesting—even enlightening. The value the site delivers time and again is in community members’ unvarnished opinions about issues far and wide—the genuinely free speech that one is unlikely to find anywhere that requires that identities be disclosed. I mean, there is so much posturing and window dressing in communications on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. And commercial interests can diminish the integrity of consumer news sites.

Yet here nothing compromises one’s willingness to report what one has seen or profess what one believes—and there’s little to no chance that one’s comments will be edited or erased (assuming they're not libelous or indecent). Discourse on threads here is not always shrouded in civility, but kindness and good humor do persist. Despite weedy threads of ugliness and nonsense, goodness and rationality eventually surface in at least a voice or two. For every post that is moronic or mean-spirited, there are others that exemplify a neighborly desire to share helpful information or that reflect individuals’ desire to know one another more deeply--and in so doing, to understand themselves.

I’m not sure if Cary envisions this site as some kind of a city on a hill based on freedom of speech. It is an essential component of the American ethos to desire to create a utopian community based on liberties previously denied or constrained. I see this forum as a somewhat shady but ultimately valuable public square for electronically engaged citizens of my county. And I’m venturing out to celebrate that I, along with whoever else is so inclined, can speak freely here. Welcome back, Fairfax Underground!

As soon as embedded content is permitted again...someone needs to post that freedom of speech clip often seen at the beginning of late 90's porn films. The one with the scantily clad females erecting the flag Iwo-Jima style...

Long live, FU. Long live, Cary. Long live the fighters.

FU (and I don't mean Ffx Underground when I say this). This is not his full time job. I was very happy to see the forum back up and running, and those commenting above and many others feel the same way.

Cary- are you purposely blocking iphone/AT&T posts? They've been blocked for months around here. I brought this up a little while ago and you seemed surprised, but it never got fixed. Surprisingly, they're not blocked on the west coast (like they were for a few years), only blocked around the DC area.

Anyway, just thought I'd bring it up again in case you weren't aware.

Didn't know what I was going to do with all my down time. Thank you Cary for all your hard work to bring us this wonderful site to use as we see fit.( Not for evil stuff), but for info for everyone in Fairfax. God Bless Us All!!!! Who had the most to gain by it being offline?

Radiophile aka Mark Webster

Inkahootz

Washingtonelocian

Meade Skelton

Mike O'Meara

Dan Meier

Whoever of these (or someone else) with the motivation to see the site end is probably responsible for the recent downtime. My money is on Mark or Lourdes Webster.

Thank goodness it's back!!! Since this site has gone down, there was suddenly "massive unscheduled overtime" at work due to the missing employees ending up stuffed away in "addiction cure" programs because they could not spend their working days and nights getting their "fix" (meaning eyeball deep in FFU 24 hours a day to include work) any more!

Now that the overtime is over for the non-FFU addicted ones, and the still-addicted ones are trickling back shaking off the brainwashing from the anti-addiction centers, things should get back to normal again soon.

Thanks for being here, and many thanks for carrying on!

Personally, I'd much rather see Fairfax Underground sponsor/moderate a debate.

I'M A FIVE-STAR MAN!!

Any updates you can share with us, Cary?

Anything about the legal kerfuffle? Anything about embedding Youtube?

That'd be the first debate in history where saying your opponent's argument is invalid because he's a knob-gobbling fag would be considered a legitimate answer.

I guess there is more than 1 meaning for shortly...and was this downtime inspired by the likes of a dancing black man...

Who was the guy that was terrorizing the community for a couple months by posting his rantings on here and on the facebook page of an elementary school? I hope he got the medical treatment that he needed...

Because Cary wants to be sure that everyone knows how to take down the site with DMCA notices(?)

I'm still wondering what the content in question was.

Fairfax underground is the stupidest shit ever!!! The runners of this site are pot heads i looked up their backgrounds on a google background check and all of them have been arrested at least twice or more. And none of them have college degrees and barley passed high school i bet. You guys just come on here to bitch about your traffic ticket that you dissevered or a drug charge that you got because you where caught with drugs that you bought and used but you say the police put it on you. Or you complain about the county you live in. If your ass doesn't like it here move the fuck out.

Who the fuck is "we?" You act as if you own the site with Cary or are him. We all know you are not and that you are nothing but a pathetic loser, who should have killed himself years ago.

Is this sticky necessary at this late date?

The incident in question took place over two years ago. Few remember it, fewer considerate it relevant to the vital and pressing issues which confront today's FU.

Yet it remains pinned, stuck like a ghost in a haunted mansion, a toxic blight on the site's psychic well-being.

Cary, you need to let go of your memory ghost, and move on with your life.

i see no problem what is this dreary drool about ?

if your unhappy with the money ...

Ask yourself why rich political kids / familiies are getting grants for $2,000,000 /yr (that's million) for worse web sites / pages.

whatever...

i get error on all images except off-site (they change - one can only guarantee they won't be there after posting using them, unless on ffu)

did google/amazone cloud storage delete your images?

did you delete all images by mistake ? (undelete(1) or forget that. if you use ms and try recover: beware - old one ruined HDs i'm sure)

or are they still on disk and the software doesn't see them, SNAFU, a little task to do, due to upgrade ? (i'd bet file perms, first)

rhetorical
