Obama wanted to give a speech at UVa this week. He has appeared at many colleges and universities across the country. But not here. UVa came up with every possible reason to say no. Most sound legitimate, but they wanted to make sure that Obama got the message loud and clear: You are not welcome here.

From what I've read the University did not say Obama could not give a speach there. What they said was that he could not stage a controlled, high security photo op at the sites on grounds that he wanted to use. Big difference. And if Romney had made the request I think the answer would have been the same.

Nope, he wanted to use one of the lecture buildings, which would have disrupted classes due to security. AND, he wanted UVA to pay all the security costs!

They basically said they dont want him doing anything there especially at that time. It would shut down classes and cost the school a lot of money and once they say yes to one of them the other has to be allowed as well costing even more.

Obviously if he wanted to be a jackass and stop by unexpectedly they cant stop him but i doubt thatll happen

Didn't they offer to let him speak at JPJ Arena? It is a better location than the amphitheater for addressing a large number of students, it would not disrupt normal acedemic activities, and it could more easily handle security requirements, including those related to arrival and departure.

Not according to UVA and the campaign. The Washington Post and ABC are all saying the same thing on their websites. They turned down his request for both of the spots he wanted to use.

Funny enough the only one Ive seen so far currently reporting that the university offered that is Fox news saying the UVA communications office told them the campaign said that spot "wasnt academic enough". Fox also mentioned that the UVA spokeswoman Carol Wood confirmed he wouldnt be speaking on campus.

That would have been a better spot, but considering theyve had pay freezes from budget concerns for a few years it really wouldnt be fair to be spending large amounts of money on security for such an event especially considering theyd be required to allow Romney if he asked after that further increasing the cost.

Hes still going down there but will hold an off campus rally now
