FCPS teachers' union

Anyone know how much the teacher union heads make and who pays them? I think FCPS has both NEA and AFT unions.

There are no real unions in Virginia.

You got that right. The FCPS union is not going to win any awards for effectiveness, that's for sure. Bang for buck, just like any other right to work state, they just aren't that strong. In some ways its not their fault due to this, but unions are notorious for areas north of here, for being nothing but corrupt and a forced way to fork over money, to a group that may or may not represent your best interests.

There are three unions: the FEA (NEA), FCFT (AFT), and a local one that I don't remember the name of. Considering that they are basically powerless in a right-to-work state the local one is the best value - dirt cheap and still offers malpractice (for lack of a better term) coverage.

To my knowledge, the heads of the FEA and FCFT make a salary equivalent to their teacher salary when they were teaching.

2010 form 990 listed presidents comp at ~115k at FEA.

Douchebag, membership in the teacher associations is 100% voluntary.

Unless you are a member, what the association leaders are paid is absolutely none of your fucking business.

Douchebag Doot, since they are a non-profit, they must file a Form 990 with the IRS, which is a public document, easily found online. FEA had revenue of 1.5M in 2010, and assets of 1.1M. They paid Leonard Bumbaca $90,878 in W-2 wages and $23,017 in other compensation in 2010. All available online.

Perhaps your issue is with the over regulation of non-profits, entities that have nothing to do with the government but are compelled to release all sort of information which you think is none of our business.

Local 2401 of the AFT:

2011 Revenue of 1.3M, Assets of 1.6M

Steve Greenburg, President, comp of 115K.

Interestingly, the AFT has 4 full time employees versus NEA having just one. With NEA collecting more dues.

AFT pays about 30% of dues collected to officers, versus <10% for NEA.

No, my issue is you morons listening to, and getting all riled up by the rightwing radio screamers railing about teachers' unions.
You're too ignorant to know that the shit they're spewing does not apply in right-to-work Virginia.

I'm well aware of how non-profits work, and if you're curious, go ahead and look at the 990. But, again, not a cent of whatever the association leaders make is coming out of your pocket, not a fucking cent.

Hey quick, log off, I think Rush will be on soon!

It's been my interaction with FCPS teachers that drives my opinion, not what someone else has to say. You want to blame someone else for giving you a bad reputation, when in fact it's your own behavior. Perhaps a little introspection is in order.

And to say the presence of a union, even in a right-to-work state such as VA, costs taxpayers nothing is laughable. The biggest thing that both the NEA and AFT are selling to Fairfax teachers is 'representation', which is a clever way of saying we'll help teachers who should be fired keep their jobs. Or as the Fairfax AFT branch says 'Get Behind the Shield' - the shield from what? accountability perhaps?

He makes 115K? OMG! That doesn't sound like teacher payscale pay.

What does a union boss do for more than a hundred grand in a right to work state?

Check out this article comparing US teacher salaries with those in other countries. It is also interesting to see the percentage of females and males in teaching in various countries. We are not the top payers (Korea is). There are several countries paying more than we do.

And gas in Korea is about $7/gallon. Clearly they have better gas than we do since they pay more.

Teachers and the national teacher's unions are two entirely different things. The latter these days basically is a political organization with a hard left focus and that's where a lot of the money goes.

Top 10 Political Donors 1989 - 2012

1 ActBlue $69,829,402 99% 0%
2 American Fedn of State, County & Municipal Employees $61,440,473 73% 0%
3 AT&T Inc $49,435,290 43% 55%
4 National Assn of Realtors $44,032,938 45% 47%
5 National Education Assn $43,613,263 71% 5%
6 Service Employees International Union $41,809,666 70% 2%
7 Goldman Sachs $39,830,663 56% 40%
8 American Assn for Justice $36,480,728 88% 8%
9 Intl Brotherhood of Electrical Workers $35,994,170 95% 2%
10 American Federation of Teachers $34,698,466 86% 0%

Believe me, the local heads of the teachers' unions/associations make far more than the teachers.

Years ago, I taught in a system (also voluntary membership) where the head of the local "association" made close to 7 times the salary of a beginning teacher. Seriously. I remember because I was a beginning teacher and could not believe it.

I don't know that the difference in Fairfax is as great, but I can tell you that it is significant. NOT counting extra benefits.

EVERY UNION BOSS MAKES MUCH MORE THAN THEIR MINIONS!!! Their first priority is for themselves and the rest of the union bosses and everybody else can bring up the rear while picking up the crumbs that they do not consume themselves.

The head of the FEA makes his/her current teacher's salary plus the equivalent for converting 10 months to 12 months. Fact, not supposition.

Did you see that the head of FEA jumped the line and got her vaccine shot with a big smile on her face. She doesn't even work in a school building or even educates children, but spends her time in a teacher's union building on Old Lee Highway or probably her fancy house. Another sham and stain on all the hardworking parents and front line workers who are sacrificing and working everyday, but they don't have the "privilege" to get a vaccine even though they are very vulnerable. Definitely a lot more vulnerable than an FEA Teacher's Union head.

There is plenty of vaccine to go around for teachers. Do not complain. Northam is making the Union even stronger.
