Fairfax will kill deer- Called Archery Program
Posted by: Lady Nature ()
Date: August 23, 2012 06:37PM

Got a letter in the mail because I back up to Hidden Pond Nature Center near the Pohick Stream Valley.
From September 15, 2012 to Feb. 11, 2013, sharpshooters with bows will be in tree stands six days a week (Sun. the only non hunt day) killing Bambi.

My kids play in the woods and my dog goes on hikes with me.

Why is Fairfax calling this an Archery Program?

There is no bag limit.

Deer that leave parkland cannot be retrieved without permission of the private property owner.

[NOTE: Un-retrievable or wounded deer that travel off park property MUST be reported immediately.]

There are too many Bambi's out there getting hit by cars and starting shit, I think it's a fine idea.

Don't worry about the rug rats, blaze orange probably not needed, but you can surely err on the side of caution.

They should give neighbors like you a crack at some of the venison.

Kill em all. There are WAY too many deer around here with no predators to thin the herds. Cars just don't kill enough of them.

And if your kids really do play in the woods you should be glad the county is thinning the herds. Deer are dangerous. They carry diseases and ticks, which carry lyme disease at times, and the deer around here have NO FEAR of humans. They will walk right onto your deck or porch.

It's called an archery program because they can't use guns and it isn't really hunting since the deer aren't afraid of humans and literally just stand there like a target.

These programs HAVE made a difference. Several years ago I had 16-18 deer in my west Springfield backyard daily. Now we're down to 6-8 on a busy day, usually see 4 or 5.

Deer defoliate the forest making it difficult for other creatures to survive and cost local homeowners money in replacing destroyed plants.

THERE ARE TO MANY DEER IN FFX COUNTY!!!! They eat my trees, garden and plants. They poop all over my yard. They also carry ticks. Ever heard of lyme disease? Feed them to the homeless or make it into dog food. Who cares. Just get rid of ALL of them.

....deer can kiss my hairy bunghole.

like said, no more natural predators for them, only ones left are cars, so theyre a "keystone" species. Theyre nothing more than 150 pound rats at this point. bowhunting them, inside the county limits, is far and away the "safest" means to cull the herd.

death to the deer! just not all of them, like gnats, they have their place in the ecosystem, albeit not in their current numbers.

I rather the bow hunters then coyotes because apparently its one or the other. Perhaps the bow hunters should only be allowed certain weekdays while kids are in school?

Why can't they put birth control in the pellets?

I don't want to see any dead deer being dragged out of the woods.
I'm not into seeing hunters of any type in my neighborhood.

I hope that the archery sharpshooters can get the deer right in the heart. I'd hate to see a wounded deer running around.

this has been going on for several years now.
no accidental deaths, no disturbances of neighbors living in proximity to authorized hunting locations. Hunters are smart. They will not sling arrows at anything they see running through the woods. they are methodical and take great caution when pulling back their bow. I hunt in many locations near neighborhoods. I have seen my fair share of kids and adults wandering around and walking their dogs while I am sitting up in the tree....it just happens but nobody is going to shoot anybody. relax. god bless america.

Unlike rifles, to kill with a bow you have to be decently close. Close enough that it's hard to mistake a person for a deer.

Amazing how naive some people are about bowhunting. I was in the
Outer Banks a few years ago and brought along a kids compound bow
to teach the little ones how it's done. One of the adults freaked
out when I used the term "compound bow" and said there's no way she'd
let her kids shoot one but a regular bow would be okay. She was shocked
when I explained the difference to her. She thought a compound was
some sort of weapon of mass destruction. Good thing it wasn't a kids
crossbow. I hear they can level entire city blocks.

If you kill a deer or more than one,
how do you get it out of the woods? Do you drag it through someone's private yard or do you have an ATV or Gator that will pick the body up?

How many deer were killed last year?

Sedate the things; castrate the male deers.
The deer population will thin on its own!

For those of you who would like the deer out of your backyard to go away, I would be happy to sit up in my tree stand in your back yard and harvest them with my bow. I follow ethical hunting practices. PM me if you are interested.

Yes, cause all you assholes moved to this area and decided to put up too GD many houses and didn't bother to think about what lived in those woods! I lived in Ffx county my whole life, there were deer in Vienna in Yeonas Park, but we didn't bow hunt them! Move to the actual city or suck it the fuck up. You want a yard that was a forest less than a year ago? Deal with what's in it.

And yeah asshole, I hope the deer tick give your kids and dogs lyme disease!!

My parents live in vienna and their neighborhood hasn't been a forest in over 30 years, deer run through it all the time. They are a danger on the roads and if the county wants to declare open season I don't really see the problem. It's not like the species will go extinct.

Right....just as stupid as breeding when you didn't want kids. I say it's just as logical. The deer don't bother me, but the neighbor's kids do because they refuse to watch their kids and I had to smear vaseline and food dye on my hood ornament to make em stop trying to break it. I'd rather see them shot. They're more 'danger' to the population than the damn deer, they're going to grow up and be a hell of alot bigger prob then deer. Pay attention when you drive....are the cars the only argument to shoot them? Cause frankly, that's stupid. I've had a deer bound right into my car, not my fault at all, yes kids were in the car...doesn't make me wanna kill all the deer around, makes me pay more attention driving, try it sometime.

This is good. The population in deer in Fairfax, actually the whole D.C. is ridiculous. Plus they taste good. I'm all for it, and for animal lovers, feel some solace, as deer around here need to be dropped down in numbers, in order for the deer to be healthy. If you've driven around and seen the starving ones near Fort Belvoir and other parts of the county, you'll see it and perhaps say "Fire away at em"

You know you really like the deer if you bought plants to eat
I bet you bought dirt from the Home Depot too.

Dear Tree Huggers. Please spare the poor the starving deer in the park in The Wakefield / Guinea Rd corridor. Those woods are full of STARVING DEER. So bad, we felt for them we went to Walmart and got a "deer salt block". The 3 fawns today were having trouble making it up the hill. When they were 2 weeks old, they ran up it. The day after we got the salt block, we had 12 deer in 7 hours. In Annandale. Granted we live on 4 acres on a hundred acre or more park in "West Annandale" let's cull the herd. They are suffering.

Well which is it, did the deer bound into your car through no fault of your own, or did you not pay enough attention when driving?

If you are driving the speed limit and a deer dashes into the street, paying attention doesn't help if there is still no time to avoid it. Or should we just all drive 5 mph everywhere to make sure there aren't any deer around.

I've seen deer on the dulles toll road, but thats perfectly safe too if people just pay more attention?

I have had deer bound onto the runway as I was rotating the aircraft.
A child ran onto the road (route 17) once and was able to avoid. Maybe we should have a season on children. Or pedestrians. Thinning out the deer population for humane issues (starvation, overpopualation) is one thing but for automobile repairs?
Have you ever driven the trans canadian highway at two o'clock in the morning. Lower speed, good music hot coffee.
Common sense unless you desire a moose rack for the hood ornament.
And what about those damn trees that jump out onto the middle of the road.
Kill em all and let god sort it out?

POORDEER,

You mentioned wanting to cull the herd in your post on the FFX Archery Program. I am a bow hunter and would be happy to help cull the deer on your land.

I use responsible hunting methods and hunt for meat and pelts. I would take the sportman's pledge and follow the guidelines the state provides and you provide: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/privatepropertypermission.pdf

Please PM me if you are interested.

I wonder how many of the "poor innocent deer" crowd typed out their responses to this post while eating a juicy burger made from a dead cow?

Thank goodness today is Sunday and the Archery folks are at rest.

I saw more deer in our neighborhood on Friday and Saturday.
Do they somehow know that hunters are after them?

It never ceases to amaze me how little boys have to bring their guns into the threads. So you purchased a ar-15. Grow up,join the army and they will supply one to you. Free of charge.

Please let me know if you want me to help thin out the deer on your property.
Responsible bowhunter.

I've seen deer in Dulles that are smaller than German Shepards.
Not good.

Thanks!

Have a great day,
Mark

Mark,

They're call fawns. You know, baby deer. They may even have spots. Please learn a little about the deer, before you harvest the herd. SHEEESH!

Also, how do we contact you, if no link?

Duh Duh,

You are so ignorant.
Not sure why I am even wasting my time responding to you.

I think I know a fawn from an adult deer.
No spots, small like a dog i.e. too many deer for the area to support.

Why do you think they are even having a managed deer hunt?
Even the Fairfax Police are using sharpshooters at night to keep the population down.

Not going to get into a shouting match with you.

This program is inappropriate as it does not really address the issue. The deer come back in multitudes every year, and it has become more of a sport for local bow hunters. I was walking at Accotink Park the other day, and I came upon unknown pouchers, and this is what we are getting, an increase in the sport, and not an attempt to correct the true problem. It is not the only way to solve this problem. This is rediculous. This is about accommodating people who love to hunt in the area, and they are hunting in our parks. Are we just crazy or what. There are children in these woods. The problem is, is that this is impossible, as other crazy people get wind of it, and then we have people that we know nothing about joining in in the middle of the day. Or they have to come back during the day because they wounded an animal and they are later down the road trying to put them out of their misery. This is the craziest idea I have ever heard. Other alternatives, such as trapping may not be as fun as bow hunting, however it is much better suited for a highly populated area such as a park next to a school. When I try to address the issue, with the park authority, I get no answers, no replies, simply call the retired police officer who is running it and he will reqssure me that everything is ok. This is nuts, like from a 3rd world. Any contacts would be greatly appreciated.

TRAPS? In parks next to schools? On the ground? You want to rethink that?

Clearly this activity needs to be closely regulated, with clearly posted blinds well away from schools and clearly posted times/seasons far from dawn/dusk and midsummer when kids are out and visibility is poor. Then there should be no problem.

Rocky

Deer do not strip much vegetation in forests. Because our forests/woods don't burn, there actually is very little for them to eat in our woods/forests. That's why they starve, that's why they come out to the edges of the woods, where we plant food for them.

So they do need to be killed early and often in as they shelter in the deep woods before they scatter to our roads and streets and yards.

It's been far too long since I've tasted a nice hot load.
