Epic Film Collection of FFX in the 70's
Posted by: 70's forever ()
Date: August 22, 2012 02:14PM

A collection of 3 minute 8mm reels spliced together and transferred to VHS and later DVD. They are in no particular order and were filmed in and about Springfield, VA between 1971 and 1977. Mostly of Robert E. Lee High School students. YOX fraternity parties, softball and beer at the park, tackle football w/o pads at Garfield Elementary and at Byron Park in W. Springfield. Super Bowl parties at the old Charter House Hotel on Edsall Road. Phi Beta/YOX football games at Lee H. S.

This can't be Fairfax. It is only caucasians in that film.

Schlitz was the shit back then. Usually shot-gunned.

I remember that era, and the place, very well.

Remember, this area in the early 70's was still pretty new, and I guess in that respect, it is like the outer suburbs now...that is, all that new development in Ashburn, etc...

The area back was Pentagon driven (as opposed to today's NoVa economy, which is high tech/telecom...indirectly driven by defense and the Pentagon).

Back then, it seemed every third house was a military family, many of the dads were just getting back from Vietnam.

Late 70's music for me was Steve Miller Band, Springsteen, Eagles, Grand Funk Railroad, and some people did in fact listen to BeeGees on WPGC (which had a bumper sticker on nearly every car).

The thing that stands out to me is how much slimmer the average young person was back then. Especially the girls- go by any high school or college now and you'll see an immense difference. Girls are much heavier on average now. Lots of huge butts.

Probably because they were too busy swilling Schlitz, smoking doobage and cigs, and having male-on-male pillow fights in some hotel room.

Remember, these kids were in their late teens, early 20's. There were a few adults in the film, a few of whom did in fact seem to be fat asses.

The health/workout craze didn't seem to come into play until the mid 80's. I would say the average 40 year old today is healthier than the average 40 year old back then. Teenage smoking is way down, perhaps non-existent in comparison.

Most formerly skinny people start becoming fat-asses in their early to mid 20's when the metabolism of their youth starts wearing off.

That hasn't changed...doesn't matter if it is the 70's or now.

Those kids lungs must have looked like a coal miner's.

Disco did not become popular until around 1977 and then died in 1979.

Most kids were more slim. I'm about the same age. While there were a few kids here and there who were fat asses, it wasn't like it is now. I think that mostly resulted from kids generally being a lot more active and outside more growing up. Nobody sat inside all day. We'd always be out running around doing whatever. About the only time you came home was to eat and sleep.

Back then Fairfax was the country and most of the families were farmers, so of course the most common music here was country.

What you say is true. We were active! no cell phone, no internet, no play station/ x box, no rich parents. we would hunger for our drivers license so we could get away, smoke pot, go on road trips, drink cheap beer, the drinking age was 18. yes, we were thin, and creative.
