Increased Wheel and Tire Theft in Fairfax Co
Posted by: SuzyQ ()

Last night, my friend had all 4 wheels and tires stolen from a Camaro in the Falls Church "Mosaid District" area - neighbors report the same thing happened to a Corvette within the past month.

FFx Co Police are telling her that "they" are targeting high end sports cars for wheel and tire theft lately.

If you have a nice car - lock those wheels!! They left the car perched on some bricks. It was out in the open in a very visible lot in an apartment complex.

Locks won't work. Anyone who's out to steal your wheels knows how to get them off in about a minute. Working in a tire shop as a kid I had to take the damn things off all the time. About the only people they stop are you when you lose the key or they freeze up. Just make sure your insurance is paid up and forget about it.

Crap - that's not very reassuring. Any tips for making it more difficult or more noisy or anything?

The worst part was the way they left the car - teetering on some bricks.

Not really many practical things that you can do in a lot like that. If somebody really wants them, then they'll get them. Like I said, make sure your insurance is paid up and covers them.

The bricks/blocks are standard procedure. Hit the lugs with a spinner while it's on the ground. Slip the blocks under. Let enough air out of the tires so they'll pull off. Done deal. Most of the time a typical alarm won't even go off if they're careful about it since the car itself is just sitting there in the same position the whole time.

Same thing happened to a neighbor in our Springfield town house community. His car was parked right in front of his house.

Get a car alarm. Nobody touches a car with an alarm. Once it goes off your neighbors will leap to the windows and phones to report the nefarious activity.

A friend in Centreville woke up on a Saturday last summer and found that thieves had nearly stripped his Lexus IS while it was parked in the driveway...wheels, stereo, front seats, hood, battery and doors.

At the commuter parking lot in Springfield (former Circuit City) across from SPringfield Plaza last month, a newer BMW 535 was on bricks and all four wheels were gone.

Check on Rt 28 just into Manassas Park at the used tires stores, I am sure your friend will find his missing tires.

Truth is nothing is really going to stop a professional car theft. A professional car theft with just flat bed your car away. I suppose if you keep your car in your garage, you are safe. Motion detector lights can help. They will only take the easy targets. Don't be an easy target. Car alarms only really stop those neighborhood kids.

Unless you have a garage, its not worth having anything nice.

This has been going on for a while now. Saw it up in Alexandria 3 years ago when I lived up there. Came out to go to work and a Tahoe was on blocks across from my car. Rte. 1 Buick GMC pulls all their top of the line Tahoe's, etc into the the garage as they have gotten hit more than once with people stealing the wheels off the trucks.

Luckily, I park my car in a garage now. Parts for my car have shot up the past year or so. The front clip I could buy for ~$200 a year ago is over ~$1000 now.

Ask yourself how many times you heard a car alarm. Then ask yourself how many times you called the police to report the alarm. EXACTLY.

Wheel locks do NOTHING to prevent theft. They are EASILY bypassed. Lost a set of wheels recently as well. They weren't on a high end car and they weren't expensive wheels, doesn't matter. Thieves will take what they can, when they can.

I agree with WheelsUp, make sure your insurance is paid up.

The Republicans will solve this problem.

Akin and Ryan will have the thieves raped.

Romney will make them serve a Mormon mission.

If all else fails, Allen will burn a cross in front of their house and hang a noose on their doorknob.

In the Old West, if you were caught stealing someone's horse you were hanged. A car is the modern day horse. What has changed? String 'em up!!

I dont think it is blacks from PG. Too far to travel. Most likely illegals in that area, Falls Church and Centreville. The tires will turn up at the used tire stores on 28 in Manassas.

To put it bluntly and from the mouth of a Maryland thief, Question: "Why did you come over here to steal"? Reply from Maryland Thief:"Cuz there's nuffin' left to steal where I live". Plus there's an old addage, "don't shit where you eat". I assure you they come from far and wide to prey on the dipshit suburbanites of Fairfax county who are too lazy to lock their front doors, close their garage doors or leave their keys in their car.

I would like to thank Sharon Bulova and Gerry Connolly for inviting us to Fairfax and ignore laws. We take what we want, when we want it, from wherever we want. Thanks Gerry and Sharon for letting us know we're above the law! Now you taxpayers get back to work - someone has to pay for my luxury subsidized housing!

The thieves who steal tires are not professional. A pro wouldn't waste time with tires or radios/ steal the whole vehicle.
You purchase a nice car to seek attention. Well, you reached the objective.
Be happy with your accomplishments.

The junk steel rims on my Prius came stock from the factory with wheel locks. The nice covers for the rims just pull off. Why even bother locking them?

People are desperate these days. If some is stealing stock rims, they probably only want the tires.

A viable method to deter wheel theft might to smear the wheels with your own feces. At a minimum, the crook will get quite a lesson about life.

I beg to differ but we live in a townhouse development where nothing goes unnoticed.
If a car alarm goes off here several people in different homes will check to see what's
going on. During weekdays we have a number of retirees who keep an eye on
things and we'll drop a dime in a heartbeat if anything is out of order. We like our shotguns too.

When things are slow in front of 7-11, and the bike paths are empty, the local Hispanics resort to stealing tires.

Get some of that plasti dip in a spray can that looks like a cheap metal. Put that on your rims, don't wash your car for a couple months??? There's probably some video's on YouTube that tell you how to apply it. Try it out on cardboard, first.
That plus insurance, I can't stand dealing with insurance companies.
