Where to get shrimp and grits in NoVa?
Posted by: DLM49 ()

I've been craving shrimp and grits something fierce lately. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in the area that serves this feast of the gods?

There aren't really many that will meet your expectations around here. You won't find anything like you are expecting. That being said, Mad Fox and Dogwood in Falls Church both have a decent variation on shrimp-n-grits. Dogwood's is better, but it is only an appetizer size.

Thanks Charleston. I just looked at the Dogwood menu and it's on there! I'll be sure to head over there some time this weekend to check it out.

They serve it with polenta and call it a "grit cake." Their food is generally decent, but not that dish. Clare and Don's does the same thing.

You know, I try to like Coastal Flats. I've been there three times and each time leave thinking, "Meh". The food is good but when I have a choice of places to go for dinner, it's never my first pick.

Talking about shrimp n' grits now has me wanting some too.

What do you expect? It is a GAR restaurant and just like the rest, it reaks of mediocrity and is meant to appease those with less refined palates.

Meh. Decent, but hardly worth the trip to Reston.

Their Sautéed Shrimp & Creamy Grit Cakes is like my favorite thing on their menu.

I never thought that was polenta though, seems like grits to me.

No. GAR is great food and I for one applaud them for keeping it casual. I also thank them for their ability to expose frauds like you. People who only judge a restaurant on the price tag and exclusivity.

Some of the most discerning food fans I know, folks who have dined the world over, myself included... find GAR to be great.

I am happy that you enjoy your overly salted entrees and doughnuts as an appetizer.

Just because you have eaten at McDonalds on three continents does not make you a world class gastronome.

A discerning palate would not classify the pedestrian and unimaginative food served at GAR as "great."

Given your extensive opinion of the food.... I must ask, Why have you gone there so many times then?

I could keep this up for hours. Try and find a bad critic review and Ill find 5 for their food for every 1 against.

If you consider a dozen times over the past 20 years as "so many times," I question your math skills.

I am sure you could keep this up for hours. It is probably the most productive thing you will do all day. Given that zagats is made up from amateur reviewers and one of your links is six years old and the other is someone's blog, finding happy fatties should not be that hard.

Oh, and your link to the blog more than proves my point:

"Dinner is similarly tasty, but of course the bread in the basket isn't donut-like at all...tear."

Tears over not having donut bread for dinner. Yeah, stay classy GAR fans.

Here are a couple of options:

I like the shrimp and grits at Coastal Flats, Mad Fox and Vidalia. I've heard that Georgia Brown and Southside 815 have them, too.

Mad Fox http://madfoxbrewing.com/menu/

Vidalia http://www.vidaliadc.com/

Georgia Browns http://www.gbrowns.com/index.php

Carlye Grand's version is pretty good too.

Shocking that someone on the internet would call me a pretentions douchebag.

If it makes you happy, so be it and more power to you. McDonald's makes millions of people happy each day, but I don't consider it great.

Oh, and why would you expect Carlyle's to be any different than Coastal Flats? It is the same recipe concocted in the same kitchen. There is nothing unique about it. You do realize that despite the fact that there are different names on the restaurants, they are all part of the same restaurant chain and have numerous overlapping items. You know what? Nevermind, I can see how a person like you would appreciate GARs.

Nope. They are the exact same. Sorry, dummy. The sad thing is that you probably believe that they are different. The menus don't even try to make them sound different. Enjoy your donut rolls!

That chicken place which took their spot is ok, not great. The Korean Fried Chicken, which the sauce on it, is the best thing on the menu.

Wine List's pompous, misplaced opinions aside, GAR has very good food and is one of the best values in the NoVA area.

The other post mentioned Mad Fox. Was there last night. Good food, lively crowd on the bar side. Very spacious compared to most of the elbow to elbow places you find around here.

Maple Avenue Restaurant, located in Vienna has incredible Shrimp and Grits. It's a tiny little place, though, so you may want to call ahead for reservations.
