Its just not fair (Va job Market)

This job market sucks! So I go through a temp agency, work for about 5 months and get hired on to a job making 41K plus a free apartment. I keep that job for almost 3 years then I get layed off. Now I have to start all over again with this damn temp agency making $12 an hour and no guarantee to get hired like last time. I can't imagine myself being 40 and this happening. How do people survive like this?

The local job market is hot relative to most parts of the country. First, be glad you're not living in a place like Pittsburgh or Buffalo. There are thousands and thousands of good high-paying jobs in the DC area. Secondly, remember why they call it a "temp" agency. They only need you temporarily, therefore you should only need them temporarily. Always be looking for a permanent position while you're with them- don't rely on them to to it for you. Lastly, don't give up and don't get defeated, finding the right job is hard work and a path filled with frustration.

It's called "marketable skills." You are back at a temp agency because you don't have them. I would suggest getting a college degree. If you already have one, I would suggest going back to school for something people will actually hire you for.

Washtone is pretty much dead-on. And from the description of that job, I would suspect you were a maintenance man.... not sure what kind of marketability comes from that.

Life's not fair, son.

If you want fair, join the army.

"Temp" says it all. The DC area is a wonderland of career opportunities
if you just look for them and be aggressive. I just spent a week in Dayton,
Ohio and things are tough. Take a look at the local help wanted ads there
and compare to here. "Take it easy, but take it" (Pete Seeger)

Property Manager jobs are falling out of the sky around here. You have had to screw up pretty bad at your last property to not be able to find a job. Did you steal something? Get sued? You can tell us. We are all very sympathetic here. Think of us as your soul mates.
