Bounty Hunters, could it happen here?
Posted by: Am I paranoid? ()

I just read a story about a bounty hunter who broke into a woman's home, took her into custody at gunpoint, and then brought her to jail. When they got there, the bounty hunter was told she wasn't a wanted individual by any law enforcement organizations....

WTF?? Could that happen here in Fairfax County?

Actually this is a good question. Virginia has very liberal laws in bounty hunting/bail enforcement work. They are allowed a lot more leeway than other states.

What logic? I just related the facts as I read them in the news story.

It really happened, near Savannah GA.

They do not have that much leeway. The bounty hunter would most likely find himself in jail for a few different law violations.

Actually we work in a four man team. Wear full body armor, carry M-4s & Glocks. You would be the one to bleed out if you pull a firearm.

Actually, a real bounty hunter had better be 100% certain that he's got the right person when detaining someone. It's true that Virginia has some very loose laws when it comes to bail bondsmen and bounty hunters.

However, if a bounty hunter were stupid enough to grab the wrong person then they could very likely be charged with kidnapping and various other crimes.

Yes, a bounty hunter can break into a house, can go just about anywhere to arrest the bail jumper and he has a lot of leeway in the methodology of his work. Nevertheless, the line that must not be crossed is detaining an innocent person by mistake or otherwise. That is a protection that bounty hunters do not have.
